An Ivory Admissions Token to Vauxhall Gardens, 1808, to hear Miss Fearon, the oval token engraved and stained with date and 'Two' denoting the fact that the ticket admitted two people, and 'Miss Fearon' to the reverse 5½cm (2in) Provenance: From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood CBE Miss Fearon (or Feron) was a famous soloist who sang at the Vauxhall Gardens. There is a delightful engraving held at the Victoria & Albert Museum illustrating Miss Fearon on the stage entitled "The Romp, or the Great Catalani: Sung, with unprecedented applause by Miss Feron at the Vauxhall Gardens". (Museum No S294-1997). A contemporary diary records 'On the evening of the 2d ult. we were regaled with the imitative powers of Miss Feron; but, while they excite our admiration, we cannot help lamenting that those exertions will infallibly, in the end, ruin her voice'. (Minet V, f.82) She studied under the violinist Charles Cobham and also in Italy. Her admission ticket for the 1808 season is held at the Foundling Museum, part of the Gerald Coke Handel Collection. The Vauxhall Gardens stood on the south side of the Thames, a short distance east of Vauxhall Bridge. It was one of the leading venues for public entertainment from the reign of Charles II almost to the end of the 19th century. Samuel Pepys recorded many trips to the gardens in his diaries. The artist William Hogarth is credited with encouraging the owner, William Tyler, to transform the gardens into a leafy pleasure garden and was given a lifetime pass. The Gardens drew all manner of people and supported enormous crowds, with the paths being noted for romantic assignations and entertainment being provided by concerts, firework displays, tightrope walkers and hot-air balloon ascents. The gardens closed in 1859.
