Lady's Mantle, circa 1991, watercolour and pencil drawing of a flowering lady's mantle plant, showing roots and a vignette of a bud lower right, drawn on thick white paper and inscribed [for Alan Bates] in black ballpoint pen to upper right blank area, '"Lady's Mantle... Lady's Mantle...! You've spoilt my Lady's Mantle!" - and MADE "my" (your) film - flourish! bloom-!' with love heart and Potter's signature beneath, 35.5 x 25cm (14 x 10ins), framed and glazed Provenance: From the family of Sir Alan Bates (1934-2003). Alan Bates may have been given this around the time he starred in Dennis Potter's film Secret Friends (1991), written and directed by Potter. It was based on his own novel Ticket to Ride (1986) and concerns a herbithologist who is unable to make love to his wife unless he imagines her as a prostitute. (1)

Keulemans (heightened in gum arabic), colour map, top edge gilt, fore edge untrimmed, original green quarter morocco by W. B. Frostick (ticket to front pastedown), green cloth sides, spine sunned, 4to (28 x 19.8 cm) Anker p. 68 ('A beautiful work); Nissen IVB 212; Wood p. 305 ('An excellent account'); Zimmer p. 151. Out-of-series copy from the limited edition of 300. Crawshay, a British army officer, visited Tierra del Fuego on behalf of the British Museum in 1904, and catalogued 'three species of plover, two species of oystercatcher, godwits, and white-rumped sandpipers' (Cramer, The Narrow Edge: a Tiny Bird, an Ancient Crab and an Epic Journey, p. 11). One of 200 copies signed by the author. The text is largely taken from Hudson and Sclater's Argentine Ornithology (for which see lot 100), but the plates are new. (3)

Malcolm's interview is from 'Tony Wilson's 'In The City 'when Malcolm confessed to wiping Sid's knife clean in the notorious Chelsea Hotel killing of Nancy Spungen. Rotten's book is good, but I preferred Steve Jones's."

This ticket was sold to me by Malcolm Mclaren himself! The next time I met him was at Tony Wilson’s ‘In The City’. I suspect I also have the second night ticket somewhere too, I just wish I could find it."

(Provenance: The vendor's late wife collected the autographs from outside the ABC Cinema in Plymouth in 1963, sold together with an article from a local newspaper in 1988, showing a photograph of the autographs with a write-up of how they were obtained), also a copy of 'Big New Beat' magazine.

Both are in good, ex-use condition and are partially stocked with whole and part-used punch ticket packs, the first contains generic 'Omnibus' tickets and the second has packs for Blue Bell Buses of March. 1959 London Transport 'Ultimate' TICKET MACHINE, serial no U 399. One of the first LT machines (purchased for one-man operation of RFs), it has a polished alloy casing and 'Ultimate' plate, unlike LT's later machines. Comes with its original, numbered metal box and internal rack filled with unused LT pre-decimal ticket rolls. Decimal-value stickers have been added above the levers.
