Nott (John). The Cook's and Confectioner's Dictionary: or, the Accomplish'd Housewife's Companion. Containing the Newest and Best Receipts and Directions in the several Branches of Cookery, Pastry, Confectionary, Liquors, &c..., the Fourth Edition, improv'd with some choice Receipts, 1733, engraved frontispiece, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials, scattered spotting, book ticket of Bibury Vicarage, Fairford, rubbed contemporary calf, rebacked, 8vo Bitting p.347, Oxford p.57 (in notes only). The start of the book contains a fascinating and amusing description of practical jokes played at banquets 'in former days'. This includes a decorated paste-board castle with cannons, made from gilt 'kexes', that fire at a paste-board ship, egg-shells filled with rose-water for guests to throw at each other, and pies filled with frogs and live birds to 'cause a surprizing and diverting Hurly-burly' among the guests. Mason to the banquet, together with Manchester Chamber of Commerce. Address of Mr. H.M. Parnall, 1888, plus later ownership signature of R. Vaughan Edwards at head of same front free endpaper, paper tears with marginal loss to foremargins of pp. 157-60, the larger loss being to the margin of the second leaf and just shaving final letter 'e' on page 159, original green cloth gilt with Edmonds & Remnants ticket to rear pastedown, a little rubbed and light markings from cup rings to lower cover, 8vo Freeman 376, variant b. Tokens, British, Hampshire, Southampton, farthing-sized medalet in silver, 1789, bust of George III l., rev. town arms within wreath, VISITED SOUTHAMPTON JUNE 26 (DH.115), very fine, pleasing deep tone, extremely rare *ex Baldwin’s vault The old Baldwin ticket with this declares 'in silver only two known', the other presumably being the superior specimen sold for £440 hammer at Baldwin's Auction 102, lot 1961, on 4 October 2016. BHM (315) records no examples in silver.

I PROMISE TO PAY TO THE HONBLE GEO: YEOMAN OR BEARER THE SUM OF TWO PENCE etc. (DH.5), basically nearly very fine/very fine but with numerous edge knocks and damage to centre of reverse, extremely rare *ex Baldwin’s vault The accompanying ticket reads 'Yeomanry Medal in possession of member of Leek Troop - Goostrey Cab'. A troop of volunteer cavalry was raised in Leek in 1794 as part of the Staffordshire Regiment of Gentlemen and Yeomanry.

A remade twisted leather belt with early 20th century buckles, each with applied gilded filigree scroll decoration, one with inset red glass cabochon; maker's mark MK and Kokoshnik Mark with number 84 and letter 'x'. 37 grams, 82cm (32 1/4"). Acquired on the London art market prior to 1980; ex Silk Road exhibition with ticket. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

[Peck] p. 111, pl. 49A*; Withers 178), extremely fine *ex Fred Baldwin collection ex Lincoln (Glendining, 19 July, 1933, lot 168) collection; ticket states ‘unpub’d variety’. The Halfpenny bust – the coin did not come into circulation till 1672, leaving Peck uncertain as to whether the coin used the existing token puncheon or the other way round.

It was commonly known as The Hand in Hand. The Philadelphia Contributionship, founded as a mutual insurance company by Benjamin Franklin in 1752, was modelled on the Amicable Society.
