A highly collectable, honey coloured, mixed woods wall-hanging tambour-fronted Edmondson 96 rack Card Ticket Cabinet fitted internally with six flights each of sixteen card ticket recesses with hinged wooden retaining flaps incorporating black-board strips for the recording of the numbers of tickets sold for reconciliation purposes. Understood to have been removed from Hereford Railway Station some considerable time ago. 25 1/4" wide, 36" high and 7 1/8" deep approx. Edmondson Railway Tickets were invented by Thomas Edmondson to prevent potential fraud and to streamline the ticket system by avoiding the necessity to hand write tickets, the pre-printed tickets were numbered and a tally was therefore possible at the end of each day. No doubt the fact that Thomas Edmondson was a trained cabinet maker (with Gillows) and later a Station Master on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway greatly focused his inspiration for inventing the system, which was apparently first introduced in the 1840's.
