[EINSTEIN ALBERT] (1879-1955) German-born theoretical physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1921. A scarce original printed small oblong 8vo invitation card, in German, issued by the Komitee zur Veranstaltung von Gastvortagen auslandischer Gelehrter der exakten Wissenschaften (Committee for the Organisation of Guest Lectures by Foreign Scholars of Exact Sciences) to Egon Ewald Seefehlner for his attendance at a guest lecture by Albert Einstein Uber den gegenwartigen Stand der Relativitatstheorie (Translation: on the present state of the Theory of Relativity) to be held on Wednesday, 14th October 1931, in the large lecture halls of the Physics Institute of the University of Vienna, commencing at 7.30pm. The invitation card, which was also valid as an admission ticket to be presented on the night, is numbered 00454 and features the red stamped words Reservierter Platz (Reserved Seat). Some very light, extremely minor age wear and light staining, VGEgon Ewald Seefehlner (1874-1946) Austrian engineer who served as General Director of the Austrian Federal Railways 1931-33.A scarce example of an invitation card to Einstein´s final lecture in Vienna, marking the last time the scientist would visit the Austrian capital. Of the event he Wiener Zeitung reported on 14th October 1931 ´Yesterday morning, Professor Dr. Albert Einstein arrived in Vienna to give a lecture on the state of the theory of relativity today at the invitation of the Committee for the Organisation of Guest Lectures by Foreign Scholars´ and according to the Arbeiterzeitung, Einstein spoke ´in the overcrowded lecture hall of the First Physics Institute of the University´. However, Einstein was ignored by the conservative Austrian government, the cabinet of Karl Buresch and Johann Schober as well as by the elite academic functionaries of the city. A confidential report of the German embassy in Vienna to the Foreign Ministry clearly stated why the world famous professor was no longer officially welcome in Vienna: ´Following the invitation of the Committee for the Organisation of Visiting Lectures by Foreign Scholars of the Exact Sciences, Prof. Albert Einstein held a lecture on the current state of the theory of relativity in the Physical Institute of the University of Vienna on the 14th of this month. It is characteristic of the way in which all things are treated under party political aspects in Vienna that the official bodies have noticed a particular reservation towards Prof. Einstein because he is a Jew and is considered to be politically left. Neither the minister of education nor the rectors of the universities attended the lecture, which of course attracted a huge audience´. In fact, Albert Einstein, against whom the right wing extremist and anti-Semitic witch hunt had now been intensified, particularly by the Nazi Party, used his lectures in the meantime to try and reach a wider audience than just bourgeois conservative circles.Although Einstein never lived or worked in today’s Austria, his relations with the country were close because he had long-standing friendships with Austrian scientists and intellectuals. When in Vienna, he always stayed with Prof. Felix Ehrenhaft, the enfant terrible of Viennese physics who was a gifted experimenter but a headstrong person. In honor of Auguste Piccard who was also in Vienna, a musical evening was held at Ehrenhaft's house during this visit in 1931 with Erwin Schrödinger (who received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1933) and his wife taking part and Einstein playing the violin.

1912 Titanic survivor Eva Hart signed rare 1992 Jugoslavia 80th ann FDC. Eva was seven years old when she and her parents boarded Titanic as second-class passengers on April 10, 1912. They had been booked on the SS Philadelphia, but a coal strike at Southampton that spring kept her from sailing and many of her passengers were transferred to Titanic. Eva's mother allegedly felt uneasy about Titanic and feared that some catastrophe would happen; the hubris of calling a ship unsinkable was, in her mind, flying in the face of God. With such fear, Eva's mother slept only during the day and stayed awake in their cabin at night fully dressed. Eva was sleeping when Titanic struck an iceberg at 11:40 pm on April 14. Her mother was awake at the time and felt "a slight bump". She immediately asked her husband to investigate the disturbance and he reluctantly left the cabin. Upon his return, he alerted her and Eva to the collision and, after wrapping Eva in a blanket, he carried her to the boat deck. Eva's father placed his wife and daughter in Lifeboat No. 14 and told her to "be a good girl and hold Mummy's hand". It was the last thing he ever said to her and the last time she ever saw him; he perished in the sinking and his body, if recovered, was never identified. Eva and her mother were rescued the following morning by the rescue ship RMS Carpathia. Soon after arriving in New York City on April 18, Eva and her mother returned to England, because her mother never wanted to set sail for New York in the first place. Eva was plagued with nightmares and upon the death of her mother in 1928, when Hart was 23, she confronted her fears head-on by booking a ticket on a passenger ship heading to Singapore, upon which she locked herself in her cabin for four straight days until the nightmares went away. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £5.99, EU from £7.99, Rest of World from £9.99
