Scenes of Clerical Life, 2 vols., 1st ed., William Blackwood, 1858, half titles present (with contemp. ms. inscription), stitching strained, and first vol. with a number of leaves detached, orig. blindstamped maroon cloth gilt, by Edmonds & Remnants, with binder’s ticket on rear pastedown of first vol., extrems. lightly rubbed (and spine ends just beginning to fray), spines faded, 8vo. Sadleir 818; Wolff 2062. This, the author’s first book, comprises three tales which first appeared in Blackwood’s Magazine in 1857: ‘The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton’, ‘Mr Gilfil’s Love-Story’ and ‘Janet’s Repentance’. The stories were widely praised for their domestic realism, pathos and humour, and Dickens himself was full of admiration for Eliot’s writings, prompting much speculation about the identity of the author, who was widely supposed to be a clergyman or a clergyman’s wife. George Eliot’s rarest book and particularly so in the original cloth. (1)
