A Victorian brass aneroid desk barometer, the 11.5cm diam silvered dial inscribed Negretti and Zambra/London/11152, brass drum case, scrolling carved walnut stand, stepped plinth base, 31cm wide,1870s. Negretti & Zambra was founded in 1850 by Enrico (Henry) Negretti (1818-1879) and Guiseppe (Joseph) Zambra (1822-1897) and was originally based in Regent Street. It survived until about 15 years ago. The firm quickly built up a reputation for excellence and were appointed optical and scientific instrument makers to Queen Victoria, the Prince Consort and to Edward VII as well as also being appointed makers to the Royal Observatory and the British Academy. The were also noted pioneer photographers.
