SECCHI ANGELO: (1818-1878) Italian astronomer and Catholic priest, a pioneer in astronomical spectroscopy and one of the first scientists to state authoritatively that the Sun is a star. A.L.S., P A Secchi, one page, 8vo, Rome, 9th September 1864, to a colleague ('Reverend in Christ, Father Professor'), in Italian. Secchi states that some time ago his correspondent had sent him 'una memoria salle variazioni orarie del Barometro' (Translation: 'a memorandum on the hourly variations of the Barometer') which he can't locate now although has to make an extract of the works on the subject and therefore asking for his correspondent's help in sending or locating another copy, or informing him of the fundamental idea. J. Blunt of London. A Regency mahogany stick barometer, with silvered scale and thermometer, 13cm wide, 98cm high***CONDITION REPORT***Overall of a rich reddish mahogany tone, now with a slightly dulled finish particularly at the top, both lower corners of the swans neck pediment have small losses and there are further breaks and omissions from that top crest, scale has jumped slightly out of line due to the lack of the lower left screw and is also oxidised, mercury is present and looks to be working, adjustment wheel has chipping around the edges.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place.
