A Victorian Neo-Gothic oak stick barometer, 10cm ivorine register inscribed: J. Hughes, 21 & 22 London St., City & Ratcliffe, and flanked by a pair of Dry and Wet Bulb thermometers, architectural pediment above a pierced and carved frieze centred by a quatrefoil, foliate apron, 108cm long, c. 1860James Hughes was a fashionable carver and gilder who worked from 16, Queen Street, Ratcliff Cross, London, and founded a dynasty which survived the 19th century. He was working up until 1822. Ratcliff Cross was just east of the City, in Poplar, now marked by Ratcliff Cross St., E1.

London 1913. 5.8cm diameter, 197.68gCondition report: Surface marks/scratches/tarnish to case.Some dents to the bottom and some dings to the sides.Thermometer tube missing from dial.Some discolouration/marks to dial.The barometer has been tested using the 'plastic bag method'. When the pressure inside the plastic bag is increased, the needle of the barometer moves.

A 19th century mahogany octagonal cased holosteric barometer by Mason & Son, Dublin. 18 cm square, together with a 19th century mahogany cased wartime piece. CONDITION REPORT: The barometer has a loose hand and slight wear to the case, whilst the wartime piece has veneer loss. Neither item has been guaranteed to be in working order.
