Hicks/maker/London /8090, the barometer flanked by griffins sejant with swags to base and Neo-Greek architectural mount above, containing 8-day enamel dial timepiece with Roman chapter; presentation plaque 'Presented to Eric Seale Haslam, on his coming of age April 8th 1907 by the Staff of The Haslam Foundry & EngineeringCompany Limited, Derby', 77.5cm high, c.1900Eric Seale Haslam was the surviving son of the industrialist Sir Alfred Seale Haslam (1844-1927), who established the Union Foundry at Chester Green Derby in the 1860s, and pioneered seaborne refrigeration units. He later served as MP and Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme and Mayor of Derby. He rebuilt Breadsall Priory, near Derby where Eric Haslam, who was High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1937, lived until his death.James Joseph Hicks founded his firm in 1861 and was at 8, 9 & 10 Hatton Garden from 1880, when numbering began. The firm, which had a reputation for quality, was acquired by Stanley in 1911 but continued to use the name
