A Late Regency mahogany, tulipwood crossbanded and outlined wheel barometer By William Horrod, LondonThe swan neck pediment above a thermometer scale and small convex mirror in ebony slip, the silvered 12 in. dial, with turned brass bezel, engraved to the centre with foliate scrolls, a harp and other musical emblems, above a waisted terminal centred with the signed hydrometer scale114 cm. high. Jacobs & Lucas, a William IV rosewood wheel barometer, circa 1840, retailed by R. Northern, Optician, Hull with 20 - 140 degree thermometer and gilt dial, swan neck pediment, 110 cm. Bethel Jacobs was a watch and clockmaker at 7 Whitefriargate, Hull between 1838-1872. In partnership with Edward Lucas between 1851 until 1862. In August 1862 Edward was commissioned a Lieutenant in the East Yorks Rifle Volunteers and a Captain in the December; the partnership was then dissolved. In the latter part of July 1863 Jacobs erected an electrical time ball in front of his shop for the benefit of sea captains. Richard Northern was listed as a clock and watch maker in Lowgate, Hull in 1791 and then as an Optician and instrument maker in 1903, he was at 46 Lowgate between 1813 - 1834, then 50 Lowgate between 1838 - 1840. His son Edward joined him in 1834 and remained at 50 Lowgate until 1846.
