A Fine and Rare Rolls-Royce Sterling Silver Presentation Desk Piece Barometer, by Saunders & Shepherd. London 1933, hallmarked in two places, in form of a Rolls-Royce radiator with machined grille decoration and fitted with R-R badge, lacking a Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, encasing a square dial barometer with adjusting hands, the plinth engraved JHK From 1927 the Managing Directors of a Rolls-Royce main distributor were each presented with fine silver items comprising a desk clock for 1927, cigarette box for 1928, ink blotter for 1929 and sweetmeat dish for 1930. After Rolls-Royce purchased the Bentley firm in 1931 the gifts resumed in 1932 comprising an ink blotter for 1932, barometer 1933, cigarette lighter 1934, salver 1935, rose bowl 1936, and bookends 1937. A Mahogany Stick Barometer, signed Spear Collage Grn, Dublin, 19th century, broken arched pediment, concealed mercury tube with a single vernier silvered dial, thermometer box, turned cistern, 101cm high see illustration 12.06.17, Case has been cleaned, pediment with chips, silvered dials slightly discoloured, both tubes look complete.
An 18ct Gold Open Faced Presentation Pocket Watch with Meteorological Interest, signed Arnold and Chas Frodsham, 84 Strand, London, No.9875, 1858, gilt fusee lever movement signed and numbered, bimetallic balance, enamel dial with Roman numerals, seconds dial, engine turned back cover stamped inside with maker's mark FM and numbered 9875, London hallmark, cuvette with engraved presentation inscription 1859 Presented by the President of the Board of Trade to Captn Henry Toynbee for the best Meteorological registers since 1855, 49mm wide see illustration Henry Toynbee was born 1819 at Heckington, near Boston Lincolnshire. At the age of fourteen he entered the mercantile marine as a midshipman on the Dunvegan Castle. He soon obtained the appointment as third officer on one of the vessels of the famous line of East Indiamen owned by Messrs T & W Smith and eventually he commanded several of the best known vessels in the fleet. Captain Toynbee was famous himself as a navigator and trained a large number of navigators of his time holding a daily navigation school on his ship. In particular, he was an expert ''Lunarian'' and he contributed several papers to the Society on the rating of chronometers by lunar distances. In 1866 he left the mercantile service and became Marine Superintendent of the Meteorological Office, where he published the Barometer Manual. He contributed to the information as to weather conditions in the Southern Ocean, which was collected by Sir George Airy in the preparation for the Transit of Venus Expeditions.
