An Unusual Mahogany Fouled Anchor Form Wheel Barometer, signed Gray, 25 & 26 Strand Street, Liverpool, circa 1850, the case of nautical theme depicting a fouled anchor, thermometer box, 10-inch silvered dial signed, 110cm high see illustration John Gray is recorded as working at 25 Strand Street Liverpool between 1841-62. See Banfield (Edwin) Barometer Makers and Retailers 1660-1900, pg.96. 06.10.17, Case with some signs of old repair to the top right hand side which appears to be minor filling of a small crack, small cracks to the base, thermometer box with chips and slight damage to the beading, silvered dials are slightly discoloured, main dial with staining marks to the centre, mercury tube with air bubbles, but otherwise complete.

See Banfield (Edwin) Barometer Makers and Retailers 1660-1900, pg.227.06.10.17, Case side with some fine cracks, adjustment knob with small chips, dial with one securing screw missing to the top right hand side, mercury tube is complete with visible mercury present.

A Good Mahogany Bowfront Stick Barometer, signed Dollond, London, circa 1840, concealed mercury tube with a single vernier silvered dial signed, well figured trunk with adjustment knob, thermometer box, urn shaped cistern cover, 98cm high see illustration The Dollond family of scientific instrument makers was founded by Peter Dollond in 1750 and continued until its acquisition by Aitchison in 1913. This barometer would have been made by George Dollond (b.1774-d1856), working at 59 St Paul's Churchyard London (1804-56) who continued the business after the death of his uncle, Peter, in 1820. George was one of sixteen instrument-makers who exhibited at the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1851. He was instrument-maker to both William IV and Queen Victoria. See Banfield (Edwin) Barometer Makers and Retailers 1660-1900, pg.70. 06.10.17, Case sides with small cracks to veneers and small dents and scuff marks in places, case sides with two small pieces of veneer replaced, dial glass with one crack to the top right hand side, front of the trunk with one small piece of veneer replaced next to the bottom right hand side of the thermometer box, thermometer dial with the silvering slightly discoloured, mercury tube looks complete with visible mercury in the tube.

A Rare George III Mahogany Angle Barometer with Perpetual Regulation of Time Dial, signed H Pyefinch, London, circa 1765, architectural pediment with three turned brass finials, moulded outer frame borders, angled mercury tube secured by brass caps and terminating to a fluted moulded cistern cover, thermometer tube on the opposite side also terminating to a fluted moulded cistern cover, register dial plate signed H Pyefinch London, central hygrometer dial, glazed centre showing a printed Perpetual Regulation of Time dial, apertures for equation of days/days of the month, sun rises/sun sets/The fixd Feasts, day of the month/The zodiac signs, high water at London Bridge, with calendars adjusted by winding squares to the sides, 109cm high, 69cm wide see illustration Henry Pyefinch (1763-90) is recorded as working at the Golden Quadrant, SUN and Spectacles, 67 Cornhill, London in 1763. In 1765, in conjunction with J.H.de Magellan, a Portuguese scientist, he patented an instrument to measure the effect of the weight of the atmosphere and the variations caused by heat and cold. See Banfield (Edwin) Barometers Makers and Retailers 1660-1900, pg.177. 06.10.17, Front of the case below the dial register with multiple cracks and splits, other parts of the case with cracks to the veneers and veneers lifting, the angle mercury tube is damaged with cracks and chips, no mercury is visible in the angle tube, thermometer tube is broken and 3/4 of the tube is missing, brass dials and mounts are all discoloured, central printed card/paper dial is discoloured but nicely aged, dial edges with some splits and tears, dial top left hand side corner with 40mm by 5mm length piece missing, adjustment knobs missing, barometer in need of restoration.
