A 19th century storm or chemical weather glass, half-pear shaped reservoir crested by an integral suspension loop, spout to apron, spherical under-finial, 26.5cm high The design of the current lot was devised by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in around 1793 but had to wait until after his death to be recognised as useful for predicting impending stormy weather. Often called a Liege barometer the instrument worked by filling the reservoir approximately two-thirds full and hanging on the wall, with a sudden drop of air pressure (which precedes a storm) the level in the spout would rise - possibly spilling over thus provides a simple but effective early warning for stormy weather.
A late Victorian/Edwardian rosewood miniature longcase clock, with aneroid barometer and mercury thermometer, with single train movement, height 48 cm, width 40.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is in generally very good condition. Other than a very small nibble to the front left hand corner below the arched pediment there are no real issues with the front or sides of the case at all. The rear of the case has a veneer loss as the top of the arched pediment. The clock door operates as it should. The silvered brass dial is tarnished and rubbed. The hands advance manually as they should. There is a very small chip to the inside edge of the glass behind the bevel and opposite the numeral 7. The thermometer is missing its top bracing hoop but does appear to operate. The silvered dial to the barometer is a little tarnished. The adjusting hand operates as it should. The movement did wind slightly, but is now fully wound. It does tick for a few seconds when the escapement is activated.
A large Edwardian carved oak banjo barometer, aneroid, with fruit and foliate carved case, height 108 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The barometer case is in extremely good condition. There are no significant marks, losses or any damage. The ceramic dial appears to be in very good order with only the usual faint surface crazing. The thermometer appears to operate as it should. The barometer also appears to be operational.
