Contemporary calf gilt (minor wear to spine ends and corners, joints rubbed). Provenance: 19th-century gift inscription in French on front flyeaf and note on rear flyleaf. FIRST EDITION. A rare catalogue prepared by Josua Risler containing identifications of the plants growing in the Royal Gardens and Orangerie at Karlsruhe. The primary part is organized by exotic, perennial and annual plants, and lists 2,993 plants that main gardener Christian Thran recorded in his diary. The second part by Risler contains a listing of 154 citrus fruit plants growing in garden at Carolsruh, most likely in the Orangerie. Thran was the gardener for margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach from 1731 to 1746 who asked him to create the palace garden in the French baroque styles. Pritzel 7369. Imperial German 2nd Baden Grenadier Regiment Nr 110 Officers Pickelhaube with Parade Bush, fine example retaining its gilt metal Baden state officers helmet plate to the centre. Baden non-serrated edge state cockade and standard reichs pattern cockade. Officers scaled chinstrap. Circular spike base with gilt metal securing stars and original parade plume spike with fitted black horsehair brush plume which was worn by the 3rd battalion officers of regiment number 110. Fine quality tan leather sweatband and artificial silk lining to the interior of the helmet. Stitching fault to the rear peak making it slightly loose. Overall a very good example.

A bold, dark fountain pen ink signature ('Gustav R, Konig von Schweden') to the centre of an 8vo page removed from an album, dated Rome, 3rd April 1928 in his hand. Also signed by Victoria of Baden (1862-1930) Queen consort of Sweden 1907-30, wife of King Gustav V, in bold black fountain pen ink at the head of the page, adding her title and the date, Rome, 6th December 1926 in her hand. Further signed by Gustav VI Adolf (1882-1973) King of Sweden 1950-73, in black fountain pen ink, as Crown Prince, and also dated Rome, 3rd April 1928 in his hand. The page is also signed to the verso by fiveother members of European Royal families including Prince Knud of Denmark (1900-1976) Hereditary Prince of Denmark, son of King Christian X; Prince Erik, Count of Rosenborg (1890-1950) Danish Prince, son of Valdemar of Denmark; Princess Martha of Sweden (1901-1954) Crown Princess of Norway, wife of the future King Olav V; Prince Paul of Yugoslavia (1893-1976) Prince Regent of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia during the minority of King Peter II, signed as Prince of Serbia; Prince Amedeo (1898-1942) Duke of Aosta, the Italian Viceroy of Italian East Africa during World War II who surrendered to the British with honours of war in May 1941 and was subsequently interned in a prisoner of war camp in Kenya where he died at the age of 43. Fountain pen ink signature ('Gustav Adolf, Prince Royal de Suede') on an 8vo page removed from an album, dated Stockholm, 17th May 1916 in his hand. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and a slight tape stain to the edges of one page, VG, 2 Provenance: The present pages were removed from the personal album of Baron Robert Stuker (1863-1940) Swiss historian, interpreter, diplomat and educator, a language specialist who was appointed tutor at the Greek Royal Court under King George I. Stuker was later appointed as Royal Chamberlain, Court Librarian and Personal Secretary to the King. Stuker accompanied members of the Greek Royal family on trips, took on sensitive diplomatic missions and became the King's advisor. Following his service with the Greek Royal family, Pope Pius XI appointed the Reformed Protestant Stuker as master of ceremonies and interpreter at the Vatican in 1924, posts he was to hold until 1935. In later years the album was added to whilst in the custody of Jurg Stuker (1914-1988) Swiss antiquarian bookseller and founder of the Stuker auction house in Bern, stepson of Robert Stuker.

Wightman, Science and the Renaissance nr. 721 (Ausgabe 1533) - Erster Druck der überaus seltenen Schrift des aus dem unterfränkischen Haßfurt stammenden Astrologen und Mediziners Johannes Virdung (1463-1538/39), "an importnat source of the extremer form of astrological medicine" (Wightman), zugleich einer der ganz wenigen bekannten Drucke aus dem badischen Ettlingen. "Die schriftstellerischen Leistungen Virdung’s bewegten sich zumeist auf dem Gebiete der landläufigen Kalendermacherei und Astrologie. Er gab Prognostika heraus, und da ihm diese häufig nachgedruckt wurden, so brachte er beim Kaiser eine Klage ein und erwirkte sich auch ein Privilegium gegen den Nachdruck... (Er) schrieb selbständige Tractätchen über den Kometen von 1506, dessen 'Geberung' er nach Albumasar einer im Sternbilde der Jungfrau stattgehabten Conjunction von Mars und Jupiter zuschrieb, über die Sonnenfinsterniß des Jahres 1513 und über ein Nebenmondphänomen, das man in Württemberg beobachtet und wegen dessen anscheinend der Herzog dieses Landes die Ansicht des hervorragenden Sachverständigen eingeholt hatte. Das zugleich umfassendste und bedeutendste Werk waren die für den 'Edelberger' (Heidelberger) Meridian berechneten 'Tabulae resolutae', wie sie damals zumal dem ausübenden Astrologen unentbehrlich waren" (ADB XL, 10). Von den vier enthaltenen Traktaten behandelt der letzte verschiedene Fragen der Urologie.Einer der ganz wenigen Drucke, die in der Offizin von Valentin Kobian (um 100/1505 bis 1543) im badischen Ettlingen entstanden, dem einzigen dort ansässigen Drucker des 16. Jahrhunderts. Kobian war zunächst Druckergeselle in Hagenau, eröffnete dann 1529 eine Offizin in der Markgrafenschaft Baden-Durlach, wo er bis 1530 tätig war, ging dananch ins benachbarte Ettlingen, wo bis 1532 einige wenige Drucke entstanden, und kehrte schließlich nach Hagenau zurück, wo Druckwerke bis ins Jahr 1543 nachweisbar sind. Ein Nachdruck der Ettlinger Ausgabe erschien im März 1533 in seiner Hagenauer Offizin (vgl. VD16 V 1268). - Titel mit zeitgenössischen Einträgen. Schönes und wohlerhaltenes Exemplar aus der mehr als 4000 Bände umfassenden Broxbourne library des Bibliophilen Albert Ehrmann, die seit 1978 in der Bodleian library in Oxford verwahrt wird. Mit entsprechendem Exlibris auf dem hinteren Innenspiegel.
