Dalí's Rooms Fifty Years From Now. In the Doorways of an Apartment These Curtains Will Be Hung to Warn a Person of the Fate That May Await in the Next Room. They Will Quiver and Shake at the Sign of Danger, and Caress the Oncomer If Joy or Good Fortune Waits Within'), later reproduced in Detroit Free Press, 18 February 1937; Florence (S.C.) News, 21 February 1937; Birmingham (ALA.) News-Age, 21 February 1937; Tulsa (OKLA.) Tribune, 21 February 1937).Exh. cat., Dalí, Paris, 2012 (illustrated p. 252).Rideau-chevelure semi-humain séparé par une fermeture éclair presents a rectangular doorway, entrance through which must be made through a zippered curtain of flowing hair. The hard vertical and horizontal ink strokes forming the flooring, skirting and architrave juxtapose sharply with the organic waves of hair which drape gently to the floor. Drawn circa 1937, the work is closely related to Dalí's magnificent oil and collage work, Singularitats of 1935-1936 – which was featured on the front cover of the catalogue for the 2022 exhibition Salvador Dalí: Myth and Singularity at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens. The finished composition picks out features in blood-red pigment against an inky black background and shows the curtained doorway of the present work to the left of an eerie landscape. Here, the door is situated on a small box-like red building, a certain faded elegance recalled by a triangular pediment and cracking exterior. The zip and curtains of hair conjure obvious sexual overtones, as does the intrigue of what is to be found within the box, guarded by a feathery silhouette to the right, and a flamboyant, goddess-like woman to the foreground. The concept of the door as a sexual gateway was revisited by Dalí in 1939 when he constructed the Dream of Venus installation at the New York World's Fair, transforming the pavilion into an erotic funhouse which was entered through a monumental pair of gartered legs. Dalí explored the use of different materials in the 1930s to enhance the erotic associations of an artwork, believing, in Dawn Ades' opinion, that 'the erotic can find expression in a variety of ways, most obviously via the gaze and the touch. The object as incarnation of desire is realised in, for instance, the fur pom-poms on Dalí's Venus de Milo with Drawers' (D. Ades, 'Eroticism', in Dalí/Duchamp, exh. cat., London, 2017, p. 108). Created in 1936, Dalí's version of the famous Venus de Milo was provocatively adorned with tactile mink tufts to her forehead, bare breasts, stomach, and uncovered knee.It is thought that the artist was a virgin when he first met his wife at the age of 25 ('until Gala entered his life, Dalí was clearly afraid of young women, with the fear of fascination' – R. Descharnes & G. Néret, Salvador Dalí, The Paintings, Vol. I, 1904-1946, Cologne, 2007, p. 70) and was rumoured to prefer masturbation or voyeurism more than the act of consummation. A fixation with sexuality played out across his oeuvre, noticeably in the late 1920s-1930s, a period which spawned controversial works such as Le grand masturbateur (1929) – Dalí's 'main obsession at that time can best be termed desire' (ibid, p. 145).The Mae West Room in the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres (opened in 1974) revisits the idea of hair as curtain. Dalí constructed an apartment with the help of designer Òscar Tusequets, which, when viewed through a reducing lens, conjured the face of the Hollywood film star. Her out-scale hair was lavishly arranged to form a grand theatre-like curtain, framing the tableau formed by the furniture and paintings beyond. The concept came from the artist's collage of 1934-1935, Le visage de Mae West qui peut être utilisé comme appartement surréaliste, whose curtain-like hair and red tones echo elements of Singularitats. The present work was executed in the midst of Dalí's most successful years, following his marriage to Gala in 1934 and his celebrated debut in New York. During his trip to the US in 1934, Dalí held six solo exhibitions and delivered a lecture at MoMA. He embraced his fame, going out of his way to court publicity: 'Dalí liked going into drugstores with an immense loaf tucked under his arm, ordering fried eggs, and then eating them with a small piece of bread cut off the loaf – to the great amusement of anyone who happened to be there at the time [...] Before they departed, Caresse Crosby threw a Dream Ball in Dalí's honour. The Americans vied to out-Dalí each other. Dalí confessed that even he (who was so rarely impressed by anything) was astounded by the riotousness of the ball at the 'Coq Rouge'' (op. cit, p. 235).Despite his individual success, Dalí maintained a dialogue with his fellow Surrealists, most notably René Magritte, whose 1966 sketch Le Viol ('The Rape') undoubtedly echoes the present work. The composition by the same name to which it refers was painted in 1934, preceding Dalí's Singularitats, and depicts a female face formed by her torso, a triangle of pubic hair taking the place of her mouth, the whole framed by her auburn hair. When the painting was exhibited at the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles in the year of its execution, it was deliberately excluded from the exhibition catalogue and displayed behind a velvet curtain, in an area reserved for adults only. The portrait is believed to allude to the artist's mother's tragic suicide by drowning when Magritte was just fourteen – she was discovered with her face veiled by her gown, her naked body exposed. The peep-show nature of the presentation of Le Viol in 1934 leads us to question what is behind the curtain in the present work, shown to be the portal to a red booth in the larger composition. Eroticism was intrinsically linked with danger and uncertainty for Dalí, as the enticement of sexual promise in Singularitats is threatened by the eerie setting, filled with unknown and inexplicable objects. An animate object is draped in red cloth to the lower left, while the Dalínian clock melts to the lower right, and the faceless female figure morphs into foliage. Choosing to focus solely on the curtained doorway in Rideau-chevelure semi-humain séparé par une fermeture éclair, Dalí invites the viewer to step through to an alluring unknown. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Prince George, Duke of Cambridge. A series of 16 autographed letters signed from Prince George, Duke of Cambridge (1819–1904) to Colonel George Thurles Finucane (1791–1879), between 1842 and 1867, discussing military, political and personal matters over the course of their long friendship, commencing January 1845 while stationed in Corfu, ‘I sit down to give you a line from here to show you, that your friends miss you dreadfully and that you are not forgotten’, and the following year from London, ‘I nail my faith in Sir Robert Peel, being fully persuaded that he is the only man to be at the head of affairs of this great country and I am therefore truly sorry to find that there is a very strong feeling against him and that the general impression is that his Government cannot stand’, and later noting his own promotion, ‘…I make no doubt you will have heard of my being appointed to the Limerick District in succession to Lord Downes’ and sharing distress at the Finucane’s lack of progress, ‘I wish my dear Fin I could hear of your appointment to a better place’, and in 1846, commenting on the famine in Ireland, ‘The country meanwhile is really in a most terrible state, nothing but starvation staring me in the face in all directions. God knows what is to become of it, I for my part see no chance whatever of improvement. Every body cries out but nobody seems to know what to do or what to propose and meanwhile poor John Bull is paying through the nose…’, and discussing a shared interest in theatre, ‘We have two operas, Jenny Lind a great singer and carries all before her with overwhelming success. Covent Garden is however decidedly the finest company of the two with the best orchestra’, and inviting intelligence on military matters, ‘So much has been said of late of the disturbances in Cephalonia and the conduct of Sir George Ward on that occasion, that I am extremely anxious to hear from one on the spot the real state of the case and I therefore tip you a line my dear Finucane to beg of you to enlighten my mind’, while sharing his movements, ‘I confess I am one of those who are delighted at the Austrian Monarchy having been saved from destruction and I admire the gallantry and devotion of the Austrian Army. I am also much pleased with the Prussians of whom I saw a good deal during last summer, as I went over for a fortnight to see them in their campaign against Baden, when all behaved remarkably well’, and noting his position at the war in Crimea, ‘Our Infantry are all quite ready for a win. I have a splendid division’, but later conceding, ‘Here it is impossible to remain and to sacrifice an Army and Fleet at the Crimea seems to me madness, though the people of England appear to expect it’, 97pp., some with envelopes; and a further ALS to George Finucane from Henry Finucane, dated 16 June 1842, informing him of the death of his sister, 3pp.; an ALS from A. E. Loughnan to the Duke of Cambridge, concerning a charitable donation, 3pp.; an ALS from the Duke of Cambridge to Lord Home, congratulating him on the promotion of his son, 2pp., and a passport issued to Colonel George T. Finucane on 16 August 1870, 1pp.; and various recent research notes, v.s. (a quantity). ** Varied

The rare ‘Ashanti 1900’ C.M.G. group of four awarded to H. B. W. Russell, Private Secretary to Colonel Sir James Willcocks, Commanding Ashanti Field Force, whose actions during the course of the campaign to relieve Kumassi went above and beyond the conventional duties of a private secretary - often acting as a guide, and being involved in the fighting, despite being present in a civilian capacity The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, C.M.G., Companion’s breast badge, silver-gilt and enamels, complete with ribbon buckle; Coronation 1902, bronze; Ashanti 1900, 1 clasp, Kumassi, high relief bust (H. B. W. Russell, C.M.G., A.F. Fce:); Colonial Auxiliary Forces L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (Capt. H. B. W. Russell, C.M.G.) mounted as worn but lacking pin; together with original Warrant and Statutes for C.M.G. and contemporary portrait photograph of recipient in uniform, rank partially officially corrected on last, generally good very fine (4) £2,600-£3,000 --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, September 2014. Henry Blythe Westrap Russell was born in Toronto, Canada, on 3 August 1868. He was educated at the Liverpool Institute and at Freiburg in the German State of Baden. He travelled extensively in West Africa and in the 1880s founded the firm of H. B. W. Russell and Co., merchants on the Gold Coast, Southern Nigeria. The company later had offices at Kumassi, Accra, Lagos and Liverpool. Whilst at Cape Coast in June 1900, Russell volunteered his services as private secretary to Colonel J. Willcocks, then assembling his staff for the Ashanti Field Force that he was to lead to the relief of Kumassi. Russell receives several mentions in From Kabul to Kumassi by Brigadier General Sir James Willcocks: ‘On this same day a gentleman at Cape Castle, Mr H. Russell, a trader of whom I had heard a good deal, and who had considerable experience of the Gold Coast, came and offered his service to me in any capacity. I was only too glad to accept them, and offered him the post of Private Secretary, an appointment which was at once approved by the Secretary of State; he proved most valuable. His knowledge of the country and language and his untiring energy were godsends in those days, and he accompanied me to Kumassi. For his services he received the C.M.G. at the close of the campaign, and it was well deserved.’ Further into the campaign, Russell was to prove considerably more hands on than a normal private secretary acting as a guide and indeed taking part in the fighting (despite being there in a civilian capacity): ‘Mr Russell, my Private Secretary, whom I had sent with this column, owing to his knowledge of the people, rendered very useful service, not only in a political sense, but by more than once accompanying the scouts and joining in the fighting.’ (Ibid) Some ‘spoils of war’ brought back to the UK by Russell have appeared on the market in recent years, but not his gift from Willcocks: ‘Among the souvenirs given to me by the officers was a fine donkey from Berekum. I took it down to the coast when I left, and gave it as a Christmas present to my Private Secretary, Mr Russell.’ (Ibid) Russell’s all action approach is further recorded by the Morning Post, 4 October 1900: ‘Operations from Kumassi - Punitive Measures. Hardships of the Campaign: On the following day a fighting column of 900 men with three guns and five Maxims under the command of Colonel Brake, who had with him as staff officers Captains Bryan and Reeve, and as political officer [sic] Mr Russell, a merchant on the West Coast left Bekwai with orders to attack Ejesu, where Queen Ashantuah was supposed to have concentrated a large force, and to have massed a quantity of loot. Advance on Ejesu: Our scouts, who were under the command of Lieutenant McKinnon, and with whom were the guides in charge of Mr Russell, were suddenly fired on by the enemy, who were lying snugly hidden behind a stockade on the bank of a river bed which crossed the road obliquely. Mr Russell went back and reported the situation personally to Colonel Brake, who hurried to the front with two 75 millimetre guns under the Hon. Lieutenant Halfpenny, of the 3rd West African Frontier Force.’ Russell was mentioned in the despatch of Colonel J. Willcocks, Commanding Ashanti Field Force, London Gazette 4 December, 1900: ‘Mr H. B. W. Russell, Private Secretary. - This gentleman volunteered his services at Cape Coast, and I was most fortunate in getting him; he has worked incessantly ever since I landed, and I strongly recommend him, especially as his chief object in coming was in order to have an opportunity of doing some service to the State.’ Russell was created a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George, London Gazette 9 November 1901 ‘in recognition of his services while employed with the Ashanti Field Force.’ This is believed to be 1 of only 2 such awards for the Ashanti campaign. In 1906 Russell was appointed Consul of the Netherlands at Cape Coast Castle, for the Gold Coast, Lagos and Nigeria, Togoland and Dahomey. In the same year he was appointed a captain in the Gold Coast Volunteers. Russell was honourably discharged in 1912, at his own request, upon his departure from the Gold Coast for England. He died in a motoring accident, when his car collided with a pony trap driven by man under the influence of alcohol. The accident occurred outside of Chester, 24 July 1912, and the other driver was put on trial for manslaughter. Russell resided at Brock House, Tattenhall at the time. Sold with copied research.

GERMAN STATES nine album collection of 100s of stamps, mostly used, accompanied by much reproduction/philatelic reference. The albums are specifically made for the collection and one of the best areas would be Mecklenburg Strelitz, also Bavaria, Baden among other states such as Lubeck with a four margined #3 imperf and #5b unused but could be reference. In any event, this pattern continues with NGC, Thurn and Taxis, Brunswick, Hamburg and HannoverQty: 9Completely uncatalogued and with a bit of work could become the foundation of an excellent collection.

BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant-General, the founder and first Chief Scout of the world-wide Scout Movement. An interesting, lengthy A.L.S., Robert Baden-Powell, four pages, 8vo, n.p., 1st April 1927, to Lieutenant-Colonel [Edwin] Smedley Williams, on the printed stationery of the Union-Castle Line R.M.M.V. Carnarvon Castle. Baden-Powell informs his correspondent that he has sent Mansergh a final appeal 'to reconsider his view against decentralisation in the distant ports of the Cape Province and against the making (of) a Central Coordinating executive for the Union', adding that Mansergh responded with a further definite refusal, and continuing 'I have pointed out in letters and conversations and, in what his executive committee termed “homilies”, to them how essential such reorganisation is to progress and how it is asked for by the four other Provinces and by the three northern districts of the Cape Province. I explained that if the Scout spirit prevailed at Cape Hd. Qrs. they would as members of our team sink their own local prejudices or even interests for the good of the whole. All they did was to move a resolution not quite complimentary to me. I could not help thinking new Scouters would laugh if they saw it! At any rate I did - as I felt inclined to explain to them that our brotherhood is not a Parish Council and we don't move resolutions against people - least of all against “poor bloody old me” as General Tucker would say', further adding 'I am glad however to have seen for myself the entire absence of the Scout spirit at C P. H Q. and thus, if the Union Council ask Imperial Hd. Qrs. in England for powers to alter the Constitution so as to admit of decentralisation and coordinating executive we shall know how to act', concluding by remarking that he is pushed for time as the ship is departing and that he wishes for Strickland and Raftery at Kimberley to see his letter 'to show them how matters stand and that I am entirely in sympathy with your desire to go ahead and expand this movement to do big work for the country, under personal touch of leaders through a completed organisation of compact districts under Dist. Commissrs'. Some light foxing to the upper edges of the page and with a couple of paperclip rust stains to the upper left corner, otherwise about VG In September 1926 Baden-Powell had travelled to South Africa, where he was to remain for six months, in an effort to iron out the radical tensions in the fledgling scouting movement there, Originally, it was proposed that Indians be allowed to become Scouts, but in segregated troops. If this worked, then blacks and 'coloureds' would be formed into troops. However, this was unacceptable to Scouts in the Transvaal, where a separate movement for non-whites, called 'Pathfinders', had been instituted. For some, Scouting was to be a whites-only privilege. In 1927, Natal refused to start a 'Pathfinder' group and began to register Indians as Boy Scouts. Similarly, the provincial commissioner for Cape Colony, C. L. Mansergh, decided to ignore a separate organisation for 'coloureds' called 'Paladins' on the grounds that if he recognised them, the Boy Scouts would remain an all-white preserve. Clearly, Baden-Powell faced a difficult situation with each side lobbying for his support. The Chief Scouts efforts at compromise proved futile as, in 1931, the South African government created a youth movement for boys of Dutch descent - the Voortrekkers.

Berlioz explains that he will be the next two days with the rehearsals at the Cathedral, but tells his correspondent that he can join them earlier, later stating in part `…vous nous trouveriez en train de répéter dans la salle du Museum, près de l'Hôtel du Prince héréditaire. Si vous arrivez trop tard pour répéter, au moins vous resteriez à Karlsruhe pour la répétiton du lendemain, et cela vous éviterait un voyage de Bade à Karlsruhe´ (Translation: “…you would find us rehearsing in the hall of the Museum, near the Hotel of the Hereditary Prince.
