mark of Hessenberg & Co., Frankfurt am Main, together with Halbmond und Reichstrone (crescent and crown) and 800 indicating 800/1000 standard silver, each dish of circular form, 8.5cm diameter and numbered 4253, with sunken well containing a clear glass dish with star cut base, each butter knife of 'Rattail' type pattern, verso signed, all presented in a dark blue gilt tooled fitted case with cream satin interior. 20.5ozt weighable silverHessenberg & Co were a Frankfurt based jewellers who became well known due to the great demand for luxury goods in the 19th century. In 1867 its owners Hessenberg & Wiersing were appointed court jewellers to the Queen of Württemberg, the Duke of Baden and the Duke of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach. They opened a second shop in Bad Homburg in 1890, but due to the economic depression and two World Wars their silver production decreased dramatically, and they ceased production in the late 1950s Generally in good condition with no obvious signs of damage or repair. Some surface scratching to the metalwares as to be expected and commensurate with use. Glassware in good condition with no obvious sign of damage or chips. Case a little scruffy, with some spotting to the interior.

Michael Faraday. His Life and Work. THOMPSON, Silvanus P. From the library of the First World War Prisoner of War camp at Lager, Rastatt near Baden (Offizier-Kriegsgefangenenlager Rastatt). Signed on nine pages by British, French and Italian officers imprisoned there and with several entries including their captured dates. The signatures include many RAF entries together with R.N, R.N.V.R and Army officers from various regiments, from which there are some recipients of the Military Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medals. Notes: The signatures appear to have been compiled by George T. Coles, 2nd Lieutenant RAF. His name appears twice, first dated 4th September 1918 with mention of capture at Cambrai followed by a further, lengthier, inscription dated to the day of the armistice.

Attributed to Ernest Ibbetson (1877-1959) Private of the Berkshire Regiment, in No.1 Dress, wearing Boer War Medals, circa 1905 watercolour, unsigned, 208mm x 75mm, 315mm x 181mm (framed) Notes: Ernest Ibbetson is an (almost) forgotten artist. His name is not listed in any of the major biographies of British painters. Even with the renewed interest in Victorian and Edwardian watercolourists, his works have gone unrecognized. Yet the fact is he left an artistic legacy which in some respects is unparalleled. He captured the essence of the British Army in both ceremonial and active service and captured the very spirit of the old British Army when it was the guardian of the Empire. Some of his non-military work includes early illustrations of Baden Powell’s Boy Scouts from 1910 and as a long-time post card and Boy’s Life illustrator. Ernest Ibbetson is remembered, and his work well documented by Dr Frank Barrett, who spent over twenty years to create the lushly illustrated book, Ernest Ibbetson, 'Military Artist and Adventure Story Illustrator'

Imperial German Pre-WW1 Baden Artillery, Technical & Aviation Section Enlisted Ranks Kratzchen, good dark blue cloth with red piping to the crown and bordering the central black band. Reichs pattern cockade and brass with red centre cockade for the state of Baden. Interior with brown sweatband and orange cloth lining with the remains of silver leaf tailors details. Some minor moth damage but otherwise a good example. 

Imperial German Baden Other Ranks Pickelhaube, leather bodied helmet with brass Baden state helmet plate to the centre. Brass front trim and rear spine with vent. Circular spike base with domed rivets and other ranks pattern spike. Complete with a pair of original cockades for the state of Prussia and Reich, leather chinstrap still attached. Interior with a well worn leather liner which is dry and has some small sections missing. Much crazing and wear to the helmet.

WW1 German Baden M-15 Other Ranks Pickelhaube, superb example of a M-15 other ranks pickelhaube with all matching field grey fittings, including other ranks helmet plate for the state of Baden, circular spike base with domed rivets and removable spike. Original reichs and Baden state cockades and leather chinstrap. Helmet has the original leather liner to the interior which is dry. Interior stamped with a size and also Army Corps marked “BA XIV” and dated 1916. Overall the helmet is in good untouched condition. The XIV Army Corps was for the army of the Grand Duchy of Baden. The corps served on the Western Front during the Great War.
