A PAIR OF 10 X 50 KAISERMARINE BRIDGE BINOCULARS BY ZEISS, 1916 REMOVED FROM S.M.S. BADEN, SCAPA FLOW, 1919, heavily constructed in aluminium with splash cuffs, elevation screw, stamped on the backplate with maker's marks, Kaisermarine mark, dated 14.7.16, and separately focusing eyepieces -- overall 13in. (33cm.) long; together with associated tripod stand by Zeiss., (2), Provenance: Sub Lt. James Naughton, 1919, and thence by descent; Private collection., The last German battleship to be completed before the War ended, she was completed after Jutland and saw no action in her single cruise of April 1918. Interned with the rest of the High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow, the Royal Navy managed to board and beach her during the mass scuttling of June 1919. Re-floated, she was sunk as a target two years later. It is presumed that Sub Lt. Naughton was one of the boarding party - his son served in World War II and captured the binoculars in lot 93.

Olympic diplomas from Seoul 1988 and Atlanta 1996 awarded to the former Belgian Olympic Modern Pentathlete Raoul Mollet, awarded for participation and contribution to the organisation of the Games, the Seoul issue with presentation folder; sold together with a souvenir diploma relating to Mollet's victory in an international fencing competition in Baden-Baden in 1947, bearing extensive signatures, presumably fellow competitors (3) plus signed winners diploma for 1947 Inter Allied fencing Championship.
NA FIANNA EIREANN & COUNTESS MARKIEWICZ A printed rule-sheet for Na Fianna Eireann, Irish National Boy Scouts, President: Countess de Markiewicz, 4 pp, circa 1911, signed in manuscript by C. de Markiewicz with her address at Surrey House, Leinster Rd.With two TLS to Mr. [Michael] O’Reilly from Pádraic Ó Riain, on Na Fianna headed paper, January 1912, the second saying ‘The Council is sorry to learn of the great difficulties you have to contend with in keeping the Sluagh of the Fianna going in Dalkey’, especially over rent payment for premises. ‘We understand that Baden-Powell intends during the present year re-organising his movement in this country .. You understand therefore the absolute necessity for the Fianna to double its membership by starting new Sluaghte throughout the country. An Ard Coiste have started a guarantee fund for this purpose and will allow to the Sluaghte 50% of what they collect towards this fund’. One of the letters parting at folds, no loss.Also an ALS to O’Reilly from Lewis Lonergan, Commanding, undated, regretting that the Committee could not give more assistance in holding the premises in Convent Road, but the funds of the Committee are practically exhausted; also Whelan & Sons, Irish-Ireland Supply Stores, invoice to Mr. O’Reilly, Nov. 1911, for scout shirt etc., and estimates for repairing windows etc. at Scouts room at Convent Road.A good collection of documents, emphasising the ever-present financial problems. Fianna Eireann was founded in Belfast by Bulmer Hobson, and re-founded in Dublin by Hobson and Markiewicz in 1909, as an Irish alternative to the British-based Boy Scouts movement. COLLIER GEORGE: (1774-1824) British Naval Captain who served in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and the War of 1812. L.S., George R. Collier, two pages, folio, on board HMS Tartar at Sierra Leone, 11th February 1821, to Lieutenant Thomas Evans of HMS Snapper. Collier sends some instructions to Evans, in part, 'So soon as His Majesty's Brig under your command is ready for sea you will communicate with the Committee of Merchants of the Gambia…and take an early opportunity…of proceeding to the Gambia. You will be cautious in rounding Cape St Marys and obtain a Pilot from Bird Island before you enter the River. You will complete your water and fuel there, and such other wants as you may stand in need of observing to procure Fresh Beef as frequently as you can…When the service you are upon shall be either completed or sufficiently advanced, you are to return to this anchorage, and you are at liberty to touch off the Senegal…' With blank integral leaf. Together with a small selection of A.Ls.S. etc., by various other naval and military leaders including 1st Viscount Keith (1746-1823, British Admiral of the Napoleonic Wars) A.L.S., Keith, two pages, 4to, Cavendish Square, 9th February 1797, to a gentleman, regarding a misunderstanding (a little crudely inlaid and with some extensive neat splits at the central folds), David Beatty (1871-1936, British Admiral) vintage signed 4 x 6 photograph of Beatty in a full length pose, in uniform. Signed ('Beatty A of F') in dark fountain pen ink to a clear area at the base of the image. Accompanied by a brief A.L.S., Beatty, one page, 4to, Regent's Park, n.d. ('Sunday'), to a gentleman, sending the signed photograph; Robert Baden Powell (1857-1941) British Lieutenant General, founder of the Scout movement. T.L.S., R Baden Powell, one page, small 4to, Hyde Park Corner, 12th November 1901, to S. Langston Faddy, stating, in part, 'Your letter enquiring about your brother should have been sent to the Chief Staff Officer, South African Constabulary, Johannesburg….If your brother's name did not appear in the casualty lists published at the time of the engagement you may feel assured that he is well'. Neatly trimmed, lightly mounted and with extensive, neat splits at the folds, slightly affecting the text and signature (only FR), and a bold dark fountain pen ink signature ('R S S Baden Powell') and date, 6th November 1901, in his hand, on an oblong 12mo piece with a printed address at the head, etc. FR to generally G to about VG, 7
