A British Colonial Sudan Defence Force pith or sun helmet, circa 1925-32, manufactured by Lawn & Alder, London, the olive green topee helmet with dark brown leather strap, an SDF badge (unmarked but likely silver), purple flash and tan plume; and another 'Comfortilet' pith helmet by Charles Owen & Co London, possibly First World War era, with later attached Baden Powell Scouts enamel badge; sold together with a Sudan Defence Force ticket exchange voucher and a photocopy of a group portrait showing Clarke on retreat (wearing the lighter grey jacket) (4) Provenance: Captain Samuel Charles Robert Lane Clarke, later Reverend Clarke (b. 25th August, 1891) After service as a Lieutenant in the Mesopotamian Campaign with the Wiltshire Regiment in the First World War, Clarke was offered the job of Staff Captain for Embarkation duties at Lines of Communication H.Q. at Basra and remained at Margil until May 1920. After six months of leave in the UK, he joined the 1st Btn Wiltshire Regt at Royal Barracks Dublin in November 1920, during which time he worked as escort and guard of the Viceroy. When the Irish Free State came into existence in December 1921, and British troops were withdrawn from Ireland, Clarke spent time in Lucknow Barrows in Tidworth until 1925.When trouble broke out in Egypt and the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, it was decided to return to Egypt all the Egyptian Regiments serving in the Sudan and to form the Sudan Defence Force. This was to be recruited from natives of the Sudan, with Sudani officers in the junior ranks and British officers in the rank of Major and above. Clarke applied to be seconded to this new force and the first contract was for three years. With five other British officers, he left for Port Sudan on the Bibby Line S.S Gloucestershire. On arrival in Khartoum, they stayed at the Sudan Club pending posting – which initially was a temporary posting to the prison at Khartoum North as assistant to the Governor. Six weeks later, he was posted to the 13th Sudanese Regiment at Wau in Southern Sudan about 1000 miles from Khartoum. Wau was the headquarters of the Bahr el Gazell Province and was described by Clarke as a pleasant enough station with red brick buildings of the bungalow type, despite being in an area prone to thunderstorms and lightning strikes which killed locals each year. Once the Officer’s Mess was struck and a length of the veranda was demolished. Clarke was then posted to the Western Arab Corps in Darfur next to the French Equatorial Territory now called Chad, which he described as his happiest time in the region. He passed the Preliminary and Intermediate Exams in Arabic and subsequently took independent command of native troops at Geneina station. This consisted of a modern red brick Fort with underground water tanks and a grain store in the event of it being besieged. The fort was manned by a company of Infantry as a garrison and a company of Mounted Infantry to act as a striking force from the Fort to deal with any trouble in the area of Dar Masalite. Major Beacher of the Royal Artillery was Second in Command and achievements during this time included the building of a new aerodrome. After completing his third contract with the Sudan government, totalling seven years, he returned to his regiment after reaching the maximum secondment time allowed (ten years). Sold together with an extensive photocopied type-written biography covering 12 pages covering his career in full.

By repute previously part of the Hart-Hall Collection. William Hart was a Christchurch taxidermist who became interested in natural history as a boy and passed on his skills, and later his business 'William Hart & Son, Preservers of Birds and Beasts', to his son, Edward. Edward Hart built a large collection of mounted birds, which he initially exhibited in his own small museum. Hart's Museum received many visitors, including Sir Robert and Lady Baden-Powell in March 1914. The building was described as 'warm, well-lit and very clean, the ideal of a private museum, every part of which is crowded with rare and beautiful birds.' A chart drawn up by Edward Hart for Bournemouth Corporation gave some indication of the space taken up by the cases. The total length of the bird cases was 270 feet (82 metres) with a height of 10 feet (3 metres). In addition the mammal cases extended another 30 feet (9 metres). By 1903, Hart sought an established museum to purchase the collection in order to maintain and exhibit it in perpetuity; however, no buyers came forward. In 1924, the collection was sold to John Hall, an industrialist and keen ornithologist who displayed it in a purpose built gallery in his home, Broughton Hall in Staffordshirecrack to rear glass panel top left corner

Please see the full description.BINDING - A fine illuminated manuscript in German on two vellum leaves, written on the rectos only, both leaves with wide painted decorative armorial, allegorical and foliate borders, one incorporating a fireman's helmet and other equipment, the illumination on the first page signed and dated "E. Riester, [18]92", the manuscript written in a dense black-letter script with elaborate initials, folio (420 x 310mm). VERY FINELY BOUND in contemporary highly elaborate panelled armorial morocco gilt over boards, the upper cover with a crowned gilt metal coat-of-arms in relief with red enamel bend, gilt metal cartouches at each corner, each with a central red bezel-set garnet, the upper cover dated in gilt at the lower panel "24 April 1892", the lower cover with gilt metal roundels at each corner, each with the same stone, wide dentelles, watered silk liners. Provenance: an old paper ([?]library or auction house) label pasted onto the corner of the lower cover of the binding; a number of related old mounted photographs loosely-inserted. The manuscript is an effusive tribute from the Fire Service of Baden to Frederic I, Grand Duke of Baden (1826-1907) on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of his becoming the Duke in 1892, having been Regent and Heir Presumptive from 1852-55 during his brother's poor mental health. It states: "Durchlauchtigster Grossherzog gnädigster Fürst, Stolze, verantwortungsreiche Aufgabe hat Euerer Königlichen Hoheit Gottes Vorsehung beschieden. April 1892. Der Ausschuß des badischen Landes-Feuerwehr-Vereins." [English translation:] "Most serene Grand Duke and Gracious Prince, God's providence has bestowed upon Your Royal Highness a proud and responsible task. The noblest devotion to the high profession has made it easy for Your Royal Highness to carry out the hard work marvellously during forty years of blessed reign. If today Baden's people cheer Your Royal Highness for the most faithful, most self-sacrificing fulfilment of duty in the high profession on the throne of the House of Zähringen from the bottom of their hearts, then every Baden firefighter would like to be in the front row, as in the hour of need, so also today on Your Royal Highness’s and Baden's most beautiful day of honour, when it is necessary to cheer the noble ruler, to whom the hearts of all Baden’s inhabitants belong in sincere, heartfelt love. To the thanks of the citizen, the fireman may proudly add a tribute of admiration for the shining example in fulfilment of the motto: 'To Honour God, Defend your Neighbour', for the faithful care that Baden's fire brigades have always enjoyed from their exalted patron, their revered sovereign, and no less from their exalted protector, Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich. May it please Your Royal Highness most graciously to accept the homage of Baden's fire brigades today. May the grace of God preserve Your Royal Highness and Your Royal Highness's most loyal support in house and country, Her Royal Highness the Grand Duchess, the illustrious Princess of our country, for many, many years to come. May Heaven's blessing rest upon our beloved Grand Ducal House! Pforzheim, 24 April 1892. The Committee of the Baden State Fire Brigade Association." The manuscript is signed by 7 unidentified individuals at the end, presumably members of the Committee. Bellmans is grateful to Christopher Gillibrand for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. London Gazette 7 January 1949: ‘For gallant and distinguished services in Palestine during the period 27th September 1946 to 26 March 1947.’ Jack Baden Powell was born on 15 December 1912 and attested for the Royal Army Service Corps as a Boy Soldier on 15 February 1927. After a period of home service he was stationed in the late 1930s in Singapore, where he was a member of the Singapore Coronation Parade for the Coronation of H.M. King George VI in 1937. Returning home, it is probable that he served during the Second World War with the British Expeditionary Force prior to the retreat from Dunkirk in 1940, before he transferred to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps on 1 October 1942. He served with the R.A.O.C. on Home Service as a Sub-Conductor, being awarded the General Headquarters Home Forces Certificate of Appreciation on 5 January 1943, and was advanced Warrant Officer Class I in 1945. Post-War, he saw extensive service in Palestine during the Jewish Revolt, and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his services with the Army Kinema Section, which was responsible for showing films and news bulletins to the troops; as a consequence he would have travelled widely over Palestine at the time of the formation of the state of Israel. Whilst in Palestine he was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. His photograph album also indicates that he was present in Jerusalem around the time of the bombing of the King David Hotel. Powell subsequently served with the Control Commission for Germany, and was commissioned Lieutenant and Ordnance Executive Officer on 30 October 1950. He was promoted Captain on 16 March 1954; Major on 15 March 1960, and Lieutenant-Colonel on 1 September 1964. He retired on 15 December 1967.
