An encounter at Wiesbaden is characteristic, "conversation with the man in the Coach, a German, a protestant but a free thinker, I fear many are such..."Provenance: William Richard William Arthur Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley (1813-1863) succeeded his father Viscount Wellesley (nephew of the Iron Duke) in 1857 becoming the 5th Earl of Mornington. A rare and interesting c1930's personal photograph album which is believed to depict the maiden voyage of British Airship R.101. The album being a period ' Kingsway Snapshot Album ' is filled with 9x6.5cm black and white photographs, including several of Scout / Scouting interest (including several of Baden Powell himself), various Jamborees, some of Army / Military interest, and other general ' holiday ' type photos. Towards the centre of the album are two photographs of an airship / zeppelin - believed to be R101 on a test flight., likely in August or September 1929. A charming album. R101 was one of a pair of British rigid airships completed in 1929 as part of a British government programme to develop civil airships capable of service on long-distance routes within the British Empire. It was designed and built by an Air Ministry-appointed team and was effectively in competition with the government-funded but privately designed and built R100. When built, it was the world's largest flying craft at 731ft in length, and it was not surpassed by another hydrogen-filled rigid airship until the Hindenburg flew seven years later.
