BADEN POWELL (Robert): COUNTRY HOUSE ALBUM, a fine early 20th century country house visitor's album, comprising signatures of guest and hosts at numerous British country houses of the day, neatly arranged amongst additional photographs, ephemera and drawings, houses including Hatfield, Rushmore, Buckshaw, Kirkham Abbey, Kings Newton, Denton, Northill Grange, Chatsworth and others: includes an original pen and watercolour sketch of a leaping boy scout holding the flag by Robert Baden Powell, his autograph beneath, the drawing measuring approx 12 x 9cm, whilst at Rushmore House, Salisbury: numerous other signatures of nobility and noted figures of the day: oblong folio album, later red half morocco gilt by Bayntun of Bath, their receipt for the work from the 1970s loosely inserted, full provenance of the album typewritten by a former owner and pasted onto the front end leaves. Wilder, R.N., Assistant to the King’s Harbour Master, Gibraltar.’ Crown of Italy London Gazette 25 April 1922: ‘Commissioned Boatswain Edward Hunter Wilder, Royal Navy, in recognition of services during the war.’ Edward Hunter Wilder was born at Portsea, Hampshire, on 1 May 1871, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in H.M.S. St Vincent on 26 May 1886. He joined H.M.S. Scout as an Able Seaman on 1 October 1895, and served aboard her until 19 December 1898, being advanced to Leading Seaman in October 1896, to P.O.2 in April 1897, and to Petty Officer 1st Class in November 1897. He was promoted to Acting Boatswain on 1 February 1902, confirmed in that rank one year later, and was promoted to Chief Boatswain on 1 February 1917. He served as Assistant to the King’s Harbour Master at Gibraltar throughout the war and, according to an accompanying letter from his daughter, he ‘took hundreds of prisoners by firing over the bows of ships out in the Straits, to bring them into Harbour and he transported the prisoners to South Barracks... As another point of interest his Sea Scouts caught three German spies at Tarifa during the war.’ He retired with the rank of Lieutenant R.N. on 12 August 1922, and died at Haslar Hospital on 2 September 1930.

Besonderen Wert legte er dabei auf die aus Flächen und Streifen bestehenden Felder, Wiesen und den Himmel, deren optischer Reiz allein in den Witterung lag. „Kampmanns rigorose Bildsprache seiner reifen Zeit bedeutete eine Negation des traditionell komponierten Landschaftsgemäldes. Imperial German Bavarian 8th Infantry Regiment Grosherzog Friedrich II von Baden 10.Company Metz 1907/09, fine example of a porcelain 0,5 litre stein with pewter top having relief of foliage, figure of a German soldier wearing pickelhaube standing next to a lion to the top and Bavarian lion figure and shield. Stein is decorated with various scenes of military interest, central image of Prince Luitpold of Bavarian and Friedrich II of Baden. Regimental details to the top section. Inside has image of Bavarian soldier and maiden, this can be seen when held up to light. Remains in generally good condition and appears to be in un-damaged condition but personal viewing is advised.

Imperial German Baden Artillery Other Ranks Kugelhelm, fine example of leather bodied helmet with brass Baden griffin helmet plate, brass trim, rear spine, circular base with plain domed rivets and Artillery ball top. Helmet has original reichs and Baden state cockade with leather chinstrap in place. Interior of the helmet retains its original black leather liner system. Remains in good untouched condition.

Der Familienüberlieferung nach handelt es sich bei der Dame um die letzte Verlobte Franz Xaver Winterhalters (Ausst.-Kat 1988, S. 218). Obwohl es keine konkreten Hinweise für die Verlobung des damals über sechzigjährigen Künstlers gibt, liegt jedoch nahe, dass eine persönliche Beziehung zwischen der Porträtierten und dem Maler bestand. Seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts liess sich eine Vielzahl amerikanischer Reisender von europäischen Künstlern porträtieren. Auch von Winterhalter sind mindestens vier Gemälde bekannt, auf denen er amerikanische Modelle porträtierte – darunter das Gemälde "Mlle Strahter de Kentucki" von 1850. Obgleich das hier angebotene Gemälde nicht datiert ist, ist es dem Kunsthistoriker Dr. Eugene Barilo von Reisberg möglich, die Entstehung des Werks zeitlich sehr konkret zwischen 1868 und 1869 einzuordnen. Seine Annahme begründet er zum einen mit der verwendeten Kleidung und dem aufwendigen Haarschmuck der Dame, der sehr typisch für die späten 1860er-Jahre und frühen 1870er-Jahre war. Zum anderen trägt der auf der Leinwand befindliche Stempel von Henry et Cré, einem Pariser Leinwandlieferant, dazu bei, die Datierung so genau fixieren zu können. So verwendete der Betrieb jenes Händlers diesen bestimmten Stempel nur für die Zeitperiode von 1868 bis 1869. Im Genre der Porträtmalerei zählt Winterhalter im 19. Jahrhundert zu den renommiertesten Künstlern. Er fertigt eine Vielzahl von Bildnissen für aristokratische Persönlichkeiten an, darunter für das britische, spanische und österreichische Königshaus sowie für den französischen Königshof. Winterhalters Kontakte zur Adelsgesellschaft finden sich bereits in dessen Jugendjahren. Während seiner Ausbildung im baden-württembergischen St. Blasien wird Grossherzog Ludwig I. auf sein künstlerisches Talent aufmerksam und ermöglicht ihm ein Stipendium an der Königlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste in München. Es folgen Stationen als Zeichenlehrer Sophie von Badens (1801–1865) und als badischer Hofmaler unter Grossherzog Leopold (1790–1852) sowie diverse Reisen und Auslandsaufenthalte, die Winterhalter internationale Bewunderung verschaffen. Seine besondere Beliebtheit als Porträtmaler liegt neben der technischen Präzision auch in der schmeichelhaften Darstellungsweise begründet, mit welcher der Maler seine Modelle wiedergibt. Er fängt die jeweiligen Charakteristiken ein und führt diese auf wohlwollende und besonders ästhetische Art und Weise aus. Zeitgenössische Modetrends dienen dabei als unterstützendes Requisit. Das Porträt der Amerikanerin bleibt bis zu Winterhalters Tod in dessen Besitz. Anschliessend erscheint es unter der Nummer 9 im Nachlass seines Bruders Hermann Winterhalters. In der posthum entstandenen Liste von Winterhalters Werk, die dessen Neffe Franz Wild 1894 anfertigt, wird das Gemälde ebenfalls unter selbigem Titel erwähnt.

The first item listed in the Abergavenny order is a Baden-shaped tea service of pattern 298 at a cost of £16 16s 0d. The cost of painting the crests, coronets and mottos onto each piece was invoiced separately a 5s a time. Pattern 298 was one of Chamberlains most popular patterns. Listed as 'rich blue border of gold with ovals of india work', the design was available unadorned or customers could add their own crests or full coats of arms, at additional cost.
