C.II Airship Disaster River Humber 1917. A collection of medals. presentation gold watches, certificates etc awarded to Special Constable Frederick Higham and his fifteen year old Boy Scout son Arthur for life saving after the airship burst into flames and crashed into the River Humber near Brough. Items relating to former Hull F.C. rugby player Frederick Higham, who was manager of The Gas Works at Brough at the time, comprise a boxed 18ct gold key wind pocket watch inscribed and presented by the Officers and Men of the South Hunsley Constabulary with 9ct gold watch albert weighing 70gms, 1898-9 Yorkshire Senior Rugby Competition 9ct gold fob and gold mounted amber cigarette holder in silver case; a cased OBE medal, Special Constabulary Faithful Service Medal, a cased British Gas Light Long Service Medal and WW2 Defence Medal in box of issue with paperwork and Long Service 1939 clasp. Items relating to Arthur Higham comprise 18ct gold key-less pocket watch inscribed and presented by the Officers and Men of the South Hunsley Constabulary with 9ct gold Albert chain weighing 45gms, cased Humane Society bronze medal with various certificates, Boy Scouts "silver" cross with certificate signed by Baden Powell and Boy Scouts Silver Fox award with neck ribbon and 9ct gold watch fob inscribed Hull and District Boy Scouts 1917. There is also an archive of paper ephemera relating to the rescue including contemporary newspaper cuttings, letters of congratulations. photographs, maps and plans etc

The following two lots were exhibited by Martyn Gregory in 1986 as part of 'Georgian Houses Rediscovered-Records of a Country House Tour'. They were painted by an unknown Georgian artist working in the 1770s.

BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant General, founder of the Scout movement. T.L.S., Robert Baden Powell, one page, 4to, Westminster, London, 18th January 1911, to Scoutmaster J. B. Graham, on the printed stationery of the Boy Scouts Headquarters. Baden-Powell states 'I was much pleased at the presence of the Scouts of the 1st Malvern Troop at Cheltenham. I hope when next I visit Blackmore Park to be able to see more of them' and concludes by wishing the Troop all success for the coming year. Some light creasing and age wear to the left edge, caused by previous mounting to the verso, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG
BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant General, founder of the Scout movement. T.L.S., Baden Powell, one page, 4to, London, 12th November 1930, to Goodchild, on the printed stationery of The Boy Scouts Association. Baden-Powell states that he is pleased to hear that his correspondent is starting a Troop Magazine and continues to remark 'I look upon a magazine as a very valuable and useful thing in a Scout Group, but it will only have the success which I wish it if every member makes up his mind to support it to the best of his ability either by reading it or, better still, by writing for it good [articles] or drawing pictures'. He concludes 'I hope the Magazine will have a long life and a big success and I shall be interested to see a copy of the first number'. FLEURY ANDRE-HERCULE DE: (1653-1743) French Cardinal, Chief Minister of King Louis XV. L.S., Le Card. de Fleury, two pages, 4to, Versailles (?), 5th February 1729, to Fesch, in French. Fleury states that he has received his correspondent's letter, along with that of the Margrave of Baden-Durlach, which he has had the honour of giving to His Majesty, continuing 'I am very aware of the additional reassurance that you have kindly given me and of the continuation of your feelings for me in this renewal of the year' With blank integral leaf. Autographs include Eric Morecambe, Ernie Wise, Ben Warris, Frank Randle, Jimmy Edwards, Eddie Calvert, Joseph Locke, Ane Shelton, Frankie Vaughan, Olave Baden-Powell, the '68 Blackpool football team, Finlay Currie, Jimmy Young, Joe Loss and his band (including Ross McMannus) and big band leaders Jack Hylton, Teddy Brown, Jack Payne and others. Some autographs remain unidentified.
Sword: An Imperial German Baden (?) Officers Sword circa WW1. Gilt brass ornate guard, backstrap & Phrygian pommel. Black ebony (?) grip with twist wire binding (binding a/f). Nicely etched blade ''In Treue Fest''. Blade 33 1/4'' single edge with twin fullers. In its black painted steel scabbard (some wear) with single suspension ring. A good quality sword in its day.
Boer War, Siege of Mafeking, Standard Bank paper currency vouchers (2) 'issued by the Authority of Colonel R.S.S. Baden-Powell (Commanding the Rhodesian Forces)': 1 Shilling January 1900, and 2 Shillings February 1900, both showing considerable age, framed with notes on the back indicating that they belonged to Mr Wm Wetlock, brother of Mrs Butler Parr of Radcliffe on Trent - a Mr Butler Parr can be traced as Chairman of Radcliffe on Trent Council in 1904.
Baden-Powell, sketches in Mafeking and East Africa, Smith Elder, London,1907, inscribed by Baden-Powell "with best wishes....and dated Xmas 1924" CONDITION REPORT: Cover is in fairly good condition The signature is on the end paper at the beginning of the book, the signature is very clear, there is also a separate small letter detailing the gift of this book. Both the beginning and the end papers are rather brown. There are no apparent major issues with the book The top right hand corner is slightly bashed on some of the later pages.
Imperial German Baden Artillery Officers Pickelhaube of black leather skull with scaled officers chinstrap and officers pattern state and national cockades. Gilt metal Baden state helmet plate to the centre. Officers gilt metal base and ball top with all four star fittings. Interior of the helmet has the original leather sweatband and officers style lining. Some cracking to the leather shell of the helmet. Fittings have been polished and cleaned but are original to the helmet.
