Opal and lapis lazuli brooch by Mrs Newman. A rare Arts & Crafts openwork brooch claw set with five opals and four lapis lazuli all cut en cabochon. In fitted box, 5.5cm x 3.5cm. Signed Mrs N. Mrs Philip Newman (1840-1927) was a pupil and assistant to John Brogden. She specialised in the style of jewellery for which her master was known and admired: archaeological, neo-Renaissance and Holbeinesque work, mainly in gold and enamel. In 1867 she exhibited with Brogden at the time of the Paris Exposition. After Brogden`s death in 1885Mrs Newman set up her own business at number 10 Saville Row, where she combined her own technical ability and flair producing many mostly commission pieces. Few replicas were made of any of her designs and it is rare to find two alike"
