AN ANDEAN OPAL NATURALISTIC NETSUKE by Guy Shaw (1951- 2003), the stone carved as an irregular structure leaving a small area of skin which the artist has carved into a woodlouse, the stone of rich sea green tone with brown and white markings, signed with monogram, late 20th century, 2.5" long. Guy Shaw is widely recognised as one of the greatest Western netsuke carvers. As well as being highly acclaimed in America and Europe, his work has also been well-received in Japan. This piece, which was purchased directly from the artist, exemplifies Shaw's regard for natural themes and the artist considered it one of his most important works.
