A WW2 Distinguished Flying Cross / General Service Medal medal group, awarded to 176434 Flight Lieutenant Norman Stephen Whitwell of 578 Squadron Royal Air Force (1921-1991). To include: the DFC in original Royal Mint case of issue, along with the original named Buckingham Palace slip. The cross is hand engraved in the usual style with the year date of the award (1944). The ribbon is also fitted with a silver pin clasp for wear. Plus, the General Service Medal with clasp for South East Asia 1945-46, officially impressed to FG OFF N.S.Whitwell RAF. The 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star with France & Germany clasp, Air Crew Europe Star, Defence Medal, and the 1939-45 War Medal. Notes: Flight Lieutenant Whitwell’s notification of the award of his DFC appears in the London Gazette on December 12th 1944. There does not appear to be a citation for the award of the decoration, but interestingly, the original paper slip has a handwritten line at the bottom which reads ‘attack on Rüsselheim 12th August 1944’. It’s known that 578 Squadron made an attack on the Opal Motor Works on the evening of the 12th of August and into the morning of the 13th. The Opal plant was believed to be manufacturing the tail fins for V1 rockets at the time, hence it became a target for British bombing runs. Although the medal group is perfectly genuine issues, it’s thought that a couple of the medals are later issues. The General Service Medal has a post 1953 issued white box with Queen’s crown to the lid and a pasted label to the underside. The Air Crew Europe Star matches known originals in respect of the detail to the design, but the colour and patina do not match the other medals in the group. It’s uncertain whether the originals were lost, hence replacements were issued. Also included is another 1939-45 Star, and 1939-45 War Medal, and a Burma Star. Condition: generally good to most items. Age related toning to many of the medals, but none of the group would appear to have been over polished. The most significant flaw to note is that there is some damage to the fixed suspension loop on the top arm of the Air Crew Europe Star. It appears to have been bent at some point, and then bent back, and it has a crimped appearance. There is a small fracture to the join where it meets the point of the star.
