Lot 915

Collection of 1930s, Second World War and later pilots logbooks relating to Michael Robert Titlow of Leiston, Suffolk. The logbooks begin in the early 1930's and include records of flying for Phillips & Powis Aircraft (Reading) Ltd, Brooklands Aviation Ltd and Marshall Flying School Ltd. As the Second World War breaks out the now Flight Lieutenant Titlow beings instruction for the RAF for the duration of the war, with a large quantity of entries for various aircraft including Tiger Moth's, Magester's and Anson's. As the war ends Titlow joins the RAF Volunteer Reserve, going on to service into the 1950's. Together with three Ordnance Survey Aviation maps and a group of other paper maps.

Flintlock Ordnance Paget carbine, .650 calibre 16 inch sighted barrel with swivel ramrod, Crown GR lock with safety catch, saddle ring bar loop to side, 'ID' mark and BO to stock, brass furniture with trigger guard stamped 6 0 5.Section 58(2) antique/ obsolete calibre no licence required to buy this lot, purchaser must be over the age of 18.79cm long Condition report: The stock has a nice overall patina with the usual dents and marks of a military gun. There is a very short and minor split to the toe of the butt around 9mm long, there is also a split emanating from the top side nail running up towards the barrel, this can be seen in image 7 online. The metal work has overall pitting, the muzzle crown is worn presumably from the use of the swivel ramrod. The bore has overall pitting inside. The cock has been replaced, it wobbles slightly around its axis and does not fit tightly to the lock plate as you would expect. The action works, however the mainspring is either a replacement or on its way out as it does not have the strength of a military firearm.

Tutt, 44 Eastcourt Lane, Gillingham, Kent', Bertam Cecil Tutt, a Fitter by trade, born 20th March 1900, enlisted in the Royal Air Force on 20th April 1918, transferred to the reserve 11th November 1919, and was discharged on 30th April 1920, he joined the Royal Navy on 3rd February 1922 on a 12 year enlistment, he re-enlisted on 17th November 1931 for completion of pension, received the Naval LS&GC Medal 17th May 1936 and was pensioned on 13th March 1943 'Physically unfit for Naval Service (family believes due to 'shell shock'), ships served on include HMS Achilles (at the time of the Battle of the River Plate) and HMS London (at the time of her involvement in the hunt for the Bismark), also included is, Memorandum of Agreement as an Apprentice Engine Fitter with Aveling & Porter Ltd, Rochester, Kent Education Committee Certificates for 1916-17, 1917-18, 1919-20, 1920-21, RAF Service Certificate, R.N Higher Education Certificate to Bertam C. 18th/19th century powder horn, made from cow horn it is engraved along its length with the Royal Coat of Arms used during the period 1714 to 1801 by King George I, II, and III, and features not only the arms of England, Scotland, and Ireland, but France, Brunswick, Luneburg, and Hanover, opposite to this is engraved 'R.A. 3 Coy', the wooden end cap has an early Royal Artillery button embedded in the centre, it shows the shield of the Board of Ordnance, three left pointing cannon stacked vertically on a horizontally striated field, this type of button was used between 1790 and 1802, the horn extension overhang is pieced to take a carrying cord, the other end of the horn would have had a plug,but this is absent

A Great War group of five comprising 1914-15 Star, Defence and War Medals, a Meritorious Service Medal and a George VI Special Constabulary Medal (Loose) named to 01949 Sjt H. Hoare A.O.C. progressing to T.W.O. CL1, the MSM as T.SUB-CONDR. The first four mounted as worn. Temporary Sub Conductor Herbert Hoare's awarded the Meritorious Service Medal is recorded in the Gazette on 28/12/17, p70, 'His Majesty the king has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Meritorious Service Medal to the Officer, in recognition of valuable services rendered with the Armies in the Field during the present war.

A KING'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL TO THE ORDNANCE CORPS. A King's South Africa Medal with South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902 clasps named to 2877 Pte H.T. Phillips A.O.C. Records suggest that Henry Thomas Phillis was born in 1867 in Bethnal Green, he attested for the Bedfordshire Regiment 5th November 1885, at the age of 18 having previously been a Cabinet Maker. He fought in South Africa having been recalled under special army order of 20.12.99 receiving £6. 15. 0 as a South African War Gratuity. It seems he will have been entitled to Cape Colony and Orange Free State Clasps on his QSA. Sold With copied research.

Pre New land pattern carbine bore pistol with a 23cm tapering barrel with brass capped tapering rammer, the flintlock mechanism ona side plate with GR beneath a crown and 'Tower' with numerous proof marks to barrel and stock, one dated 1800, with brass trigger gard and butt. 38cm overall.

A massive blunderbuss or Musketoon with a 61.5cm (24") iron barrel with flared end, with an Ordnance marked flintlock mechanism of short land pattern engraved with a Crown above GR and 'Tower', with a Brown Bess type railed butt stock, flat butt plate typical of Sea Service guns, with various proof marks and EI for Edward Jordan. 103cm overall.
