Rare 1796 pattern Heavy Cavalry Troopers' sword with scabbard, both regimentally marked for the 1st Royal Dragoons, with regulation pattern hilt, broad straight fullered blade, with period modified spear-point (On the days leading to the Battle of Waterloo, Private Smithies of the 1st Royal Dragoons, describes the regiment converting the hatchet points of their swords to spear-points in order to counter the French cuirassiers armour - source Royal Armouries) and therefore it is more than likely this sword saw action at the Battle of Waterloo. The blade is marked 'Dawes' and is Ordnance stamped

Ordnance Survey (publishers), First edition of the '1 inch' series, sheet numbers 85, 93, 94, 95, 96 & 104, together with sheets 91, 92, 97, 98, 99 & 101, published in the 1840s and 1850's but this is the 1865 electrotype form, together twelve large uncoloured maps, sectionalised and laid on linen, each sheet approximately 635 x 950 mm, marbled endpapers, contained in two contemporary cloth slip cases with dust caps and printed paper labels to spines, together with Stockdale (John), Untitled map sheet of part of the East Riding of Yorkshire, 1809, one (of twenty) large uncoloured engraved sheets that made up Stockdale's large scale map of Yorkshire, 615 x 700 mm, plus a collection of thirty-one 'Old Ordnance Survey Maps' of Yorkshire and its surroundings from 'The Godfrey Edition' and the reprint edition of the one-inch series, late 20th century, various sizes, with four other facsimile Yorkshire Ordnance survey maps, all in good or very good condition (38)
Campaign Groups and Pairs, An East Africa Campaign 1914/15 Trio and Memorial Plaque casualty group awarded to Lieutenant Robert Tate-Smith, M.B.E., 1st East African Road Corps, late East African Ordnance Department comprising: 1914/15 Star (Cpl R. Tate-Smith: E. Afr.O.D.); 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals (Cpl R. Tate-Smith. E. Afr. O.D.); Memorial Plaque (R.T. Smith), toned fine, mounted for wear (3) M.B.E. (Mily) London Gazette 22nd November 1918 and 15th April 1919. Robert Ronald Tate-Smith was the only son of Robert Smith of Nairobi, British East Africa (formerly of York), and his wife Minnie, daughter of John. S.A. Tate. Robert was born in York 17th April 1889; educated St Peter’s School and went to Nairobi in 1911, having obtained a Government appointment there, but subsequently took up practice as an Architect. He enlisted into the East African Regiment in 1915 and received a commission and was Gazetted Lieutenant, the King’s African Rifles in 1916. He served in East Africa from 1915, transferring to the East African Road Corps in 1917 and died on active service of enteric on the 23rd February 1918. He is buried in the Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania in Plot 6, Row E, Grave 8. He received the M.B.E. in the London gazette of the 22nd November 1918 which was then changed to the Military Division in the London Gazette of the 15th April 1919. He is the only CWGC Casualty recorded with name “Tate-Smith”. His Medal Index Card states that he was awarded the 1914/15 Star and British War and Victory Medals, for service commencing 24 October 1914 in Theatre 4A (East Africa, Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia). His Medal Index Card shows his promotion from Driver to Lieutenant, his medals were issued by the Colonial Office, the Roll for the award of his Trio lists him, on all medals, as Corporal. “The Machine Gun, History, Evolution and Development of Manual, Automatic and Airborne Repeating Weapons”, by George M. Chinn, Lt Col USMC, in 11 parts bound in 4 volumes, prepared for the US Bureau of Ordnance, Department of the Navy, 1951-55, printed on glossy paper and profusely photo illustrated in the text, in hard covers with gilt devices and titles to covers and spines. GC (Vol II stamped on the inside “Down Grade to unclassified”, etc and with part of the cover titles painted over). A scarce and useful work.

A .65” Tower New Land Pattern Yeomanry Cavalry flintlock holster pistol, 15” overall, barrel 9” with ordnance proofs, unlined flat lock bearing crowned “GR” and “Tower” and decoration to tail; walnut fullstock, butt stamped with crowned “GR” over 1806 ordnance storekeeper’s mark and dated 1831 opposite the lock; with regulation brass mounts including contemporary reinforcing strip around the open fore end, trigger guard engraved “D.Y.C/J/38”, with swivel ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition (lightly worn and pleasantly patinated overall). Plate 34
A scarce 10 bore Tower flintlock Short Sea Service musket, 42” overall, barrel 26” with fore sight, London proofs and what appear to be ordnance proofs stamped over Tower private proofs; slightly rounded lock bearing large crowned “GR” and “Tower” and having ring neck cock; walnut almost fullstock having no fore end cap, butt of late pattern with rounded comb and bearing crowned broad arrow over 1806 storekeeper’s mark, with late type brass mounts, flat butt plate tang engraved with number “2”, the front ramrod pipe incorporating ramrod retaining spring. Good Condition (action requires attention, barrel lightly rusted overall, some service wear, no ramrod). Short Sea Service muskets were assembled utilising old parts. A very rare British ordnance pattern heavy Sea Service musketoon/boat gun, 43” overall, the earlier massive brass barrel 27” having 1.8” bore and bell mouth muzzle, the breech bearing London and maker’s proofs and William III acceptance stamp; large rounded lock having swan neck cock, plate engraved with crown over “GR” and “Tower 1744”; with plain walnut fullstock having early pattern regulation brass mounts including long wavy sideplate, fore end pierced with a hole for the swivel mount; with part only of a plain wooden ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition A similar gun dated 1721 and having Charles II marked barrel is shown in “British Military Firearms” by Blackmore, P 99. Plate 38

LT. E.H. HOWARD'S BALTIC MEDAL, 1854-55, inscribed to edge Lt. E. H. Howard / H.M.S. Duke of Wellington; together with a contemporary watercolour of Howard in dress uniform; a cabinet photograph of him in later life and two photo albums with some interesting service views, approx. 1860-1880, -4, Vice-Admiral E.H. Howard was born in June 1832, educated at Eton and entered the Royal Navy as a cadet on 21st June 1845. Promoted Sub-Lieut. in June 1851 and Lieutenant in January 1853, he served in H.M.S. Duke of Wellington, Admiral Sir Charles Napier's flagship, during the operations in the Baltic in 1855, being present at the bombardment of Sveaborg (medal). Promoted Cmdr. in December 1857 and Captain in 1864, he held the post of naval attaché "at the maritime courts of Europe", 1874-76, and was A.D.C. to the Queen, 1878-79. Vice-President of the [Naval] Ordnance Committee, 1881-84, he was made Vice-Admiral in 1885, retired in 1889, and died in Lewisham, Kent, on 18th January 1890.

WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal & British Prime Minister 1828-30, 1834. A.L.S., Duke of Wellington, in the third person, one page, 8vo, London, 25th September 1837, to Mr. James (?). Wellington informs his correspondent, in part, 'The Duke of Wellington presents his compliments to Mr. James and begs to inform him in answer to his note that he must address himself to the Master General of the ordnance. The Duke has nothing to say to the Ordnance…' With signs of former mounting to the verso and age wear. G
