Palmerston states that he will be obliged if his correspondent 'would have the goodness to enable me to answer the enclosed letter (no longer present) from one of my constituents', remarking 'whether what he asks is feasible or not I do not know. I am very sure it cannot be easy, but if it were possible to hold out any hopes to my Johnian friend I should certainly be very glad to do so'. With blank integral leaf with a docket referring to the appointment of a Richard D. Grainger as a cadet; William Gladstone (1809-1898) British Prime Minister 1868-74, 1880-85, 1886 and 1892-94. A.L.S., W E Gladstone, two pages, 8vo, Walmer Castle, 14th August 1870, to 'My dear Panizzi'. Gladstone states that he is truly sorry not to be able to accept his correspondent's invitation as he is not likely to be in London on Wednesday, although continuing 'I am however the slave of circumstance &b if I am drawn to London, you probably will hear from me: without, I hope putting yourself out on my account'; Marquess of Salisbury (1830-1903) British Prime Minister 1885-86, 1886-92, 1895-1902. Salisbury states 'The debate of last night will have removed from your mind all uneasiness with respect to the matter on which you wrote to me' and adds 'The Govt.
