Sir Henry) Plans and Photographs of Stonehenge, and of Turusachan in the Island of Lewis; with Notes relating to the Druids and Sketches of Cromlechs in Ireland, first edition, 9 zincographed plates or plans, 8 mounted albumen prints of Stonehenge, a very good, clean copy, neat ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper, original cloth, lettered in gilt, neatly rebacked, neat repairs to corners, some light fading to covers, 4to, [Southampton, Ordnance Survey], 1867.⁂ A very good copy of this scarce and early report, an important photographic incunable.
Warfare.- Felton (Edmond) Engins invented to save much Blood and Moneyes (in these times of Warre) and to doe extraordinary good service, with the approbation of the Honourable Major Generall Skippon, and five of the Committee for the Fortifications of the City of London, 8pp., only edition, title with typographical border and lightly browned, with two 20th century manuscript sheets of notes tipped in, modern half red calf, [Wing F660], small 4to, for Thomas Underhill, 1644.⁂ Rare description of the author's "engin for warre, which will keep the horse from the foot, and secure the musketeers from all shot out of ordnance and much secure them from small shot out of ordnance...". It seems, though, that the Parliamentary military authorities failed to authorise it. Felton was the brother of John Felton who assassinated the Duke of Buckingham in 1628.ESTC locates only 3 UK copies (BL, Bodleian, Trinity College Dublin) and 2 more in America (Folger and Huntington). We have been able to trace this copy only at auction, sold in 2019.

An American Civil War Merrill Carbine, Transitional Second Model, .54 calibre, the 51cm steel barrel with blade fore-sight and hinged leaf rear sight, the breech lever marked 12567 J H MERRIL BALTO./PAT.???, the first type lock plate faintly numbered 12567 on the tail, maker's markings worn, the walnut half stock with brass barrel band and curved butt plate, the left side set with saddle ring and bar, 93cmFootnote:- Possibly assigned to the Indiana Volunteers, 7th Regiment Indiana Cavalry, whose Ordnance Returns show that 779 Merrills with serial numbers between 12104 and 12767 are recorded in their inventoryAction works, holds at full and half cock. Some pitting to bore. Cleaned off fine pitting to barrel and lock plate which has erased some of the maker's marks. The loading lever and hammer have deeper cleaned off pitting. The left fore-end tip has a chip of wood missing. Minor bruising to the stock.

A RARE CRIMEAN WAR .704 PATTERN 1851 PERCUSSION RIFLE MUSKET MARKED TO THE 1ST BATTALION COLDSTREAM GUARDS, CIRCA 1853, no visible serial number, with 39in. barrel rifled with four grooves, stamped with Ordnance proofs at breech (faint), block and blade front-sight and ladder rear-sight, the Lovell's pattern bar-action borderline engraved lock with the Crown V.R. cypher on the tail and '1853 TOWER' to the centre, together with the small crown broad arrow government ownership mark, regulation brass-mounted full walnut stock, the right side of the butt stamped 'B.O.' for Board of Ordnance, the buttcap engraved '1. B. C. G. / K / 42' indicating issue to the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, K company, gun number 42, Lovell's spring bayonet catch protruding through nosecap, complete with sling swivels and correct rod, barrel and stock refinished with loss of sharpness.
