A RARE PAIR OF 20 BORE FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS WITH SILVER-MOUNTED BRASS POMMELS BY JAMES SPENCER, CIRCA 1690 with swamped barrels formed in three stages, engraved with a spray of strawberry foliage in place of the fore-sights, the breeches signed and engraved with a symmetrical panel of strawberry foliage beneath, stamped on the left with London view and proof and the barrelsmtihs marks, signed locks engraved with strawberry foliage, cocks engraved en suite, rootwood full stocks carved with mouldings about the rear ramrod-pipes and the tangs (one fore-end replaced ahead of the rear ramrod-pipe, the other with a small repair), iron openwork side-plates formed as scrolling foliage with monsterhead terminals, engraved moulded trigger-guards with foliate terminals, engraved escutcheons decorated with strawberry foliage, and brass pommels encased in silver chased with an alternating arrangement of reclining figures and portrait masks beneath a frieze of putti heads (the engraving and pommels rubbed),and later ramrods, each with red painted inventory number '439' 28.2 cm; 11 1/8 in barrels (2) Provenance The John A. Williams Collection of English Pistols, sold Sotheby's, 22nd May 1979, lot 80 James Spencer apprenticed to Thomas Towle, turned over to John Tarles in 1678 and became free of the Gunmakers Company on 15th April 1686. After two years as a journeyman he opened his business in the parish of St Botolph in 1689. He was gunmaker to the Ordnance 1689-98, dying the following year in 1699. See Neal & Back 1984, pp. 204-5. The treatment of the pommels is notably unusual. A pistol by Godfrey Taylor with a pommel involving a similar decorative scheme is discussed by Weaver and Godwin 2018, pp. 114-125.

Early 20th century mahogany cased surveyor's level, L Casella, maker to the Admiralty and Ordnance - London and of patinated and lacquered brass construction with silvered scales comprising a tri-form tripod mounting base with screw adjustment to a 360x scale with rotating mount eye piece and spirit level, together with a matching dumpy level with central pivot point and twin scales of plus and minus 0 to 60 and also with pivoting magnifying lenses and level (glass tube a/f) in a fitted case with two detached compass pointers
LONGINES. A Longines centre seconds military wrist watch, the dial with luminescent hands, sweeps seconds hand & with two bands of Arabic numerals. Broad arrow mark beneath Longines naming. To the reverse of the nickel plated case stamped C.O.S.D. (Company Ordnance Supply Depot) & No. 2340. Case 35mm. NOTE: The watch does not have an original strap but an issue strap of a later date. This watch was owned by an ex-RAF serviceman. These watches were developed in the early 1940's for the RAF by the Research & Development team of the War Department.Please Note: The winder of this watch is seized.Please note: We cannot guarantee the continuous working order of any timepiece.
