The manuscript document is addressed to Thomas Erle, Lieutenant General of His Majesty`s Ordnance, and states that it has been thought necessary `for the better expediteing his Matys. Service….that fifty qualifyd and able persons should be entertaind by this Office….to serve & provide Lighters and great and Small Boates at Woolwich to carry Guns, Carriages, Shot, and other Stores of Warr from thence to Tower Wharf, Deptford, Greenwich, Galleons, Longreach, Gravesend, Hope, Buoy of the Nore, Sheerness, Chatham or Elsewhere as Occassion shall require` and appointing Stephen Anthony and James Swift to the Office. Signed by Marlborough in dark ink at the conclusion. With blind embossed paper seal affixed (cracked). A RARE .750 CALIBRE INDIA PATTERN FLINTLOCK MUSKET FOR THE 40TH REGIMENT OF FOOT, CIRCA 1800 with rebrowned sighted barrel stamped with Ordnance marks at the breech (worn, the breech patched) and later Armagh registration number `AR 5431`, regulation lock engraved `Tower` and with `GR` crowned (pitted), regulation full stock (bruising), regulation brass mounts, and contemporary steel ramrod 97.8cm; 38 ½in barrel The 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot was formed in 1717 out of independent companies stationed in North America and the West Indies. In 1751 it was numbered the 40th Regiment of Foot and in 1782 took a county title as the 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot. The 40th was part of the 6th Division at Waterloo. Under Major-General Sir John Lambert it fought in the centre of the allied line, near the farm of La Haye Sainte, prior to it being taken by the French only to recapture it soon after, a decisive turning point in the battle. The commander of the 40th, Major Heyland, was killed; of the 159 members of the regiment present 35 were killed.

A good late 19th century surgeon`s folding leather pocket case by C Wright & Co, 108 New Bond Street, London, the two section folded leather case with two concealed pockets and a good quantity of surgical instruments including a gum lancet and tenaculum, dressing forceps, crooked scissors, silver probes etc, the outer case marked with the Royal Ordnance broad arrow. This lot is accompanied with the official list of contents with handwritten amendments as issued from Government Medical Stores, Madras to Brigade Surgeon Charles Sibthorpe (1847-1906) (Illustrated).

Thompson, Army Ordnance Corps, late Ordnance Store Corps Ashanti Star 1896, unnamed as issued; Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State (2343 Serjt., A.O.C.); King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps (2343 Corpl., A.O.C.) contact marks and edge bruising, generally very fine and better, scarce (3) £500-600 Edwin Thomas Thompson was born in Woolwich, Kent. A Smith by occupation, he attested for the Ordnance Store Corps at Woolwich on 8 September 1886, aged 19 years, 8 months. Promoted to 2nd Corporal in November 1895, he served on the West Coast of Africa, November 1895-March 1896 and saw service in the Ashanti Expedition of 1895-96. In April 1896 he was transferred to the Army Ordnance Corps and was promoted to Corporal in January 1899 and to Serjeant in March 1900. With the A.O.C. he served in the Boer War, October 1899-April 1902. Returning to Home Service after the war, in October 1904 he was tried by District Court Martial at Spite Island, Cork Harbour, for ‘an act to the prejudice of good order and military discipline’ and was sentenced to be reduced to the rank of Corporal. As such he was discharged to a pension at Haulbowline on 7 September 1907, on the termination of his second period of engagement. With copied service papers.

Lot 2

Anderson (Captain T.C.). Ubique: War Services of all the Officers of H.M.’S Bengal Army, Exhibiting the Rank and Various Services of Every Officer in the Army... Also Containing the Order of the Victoria Cross..., Calcutta, [1863], one or two light spots, original blindstamped cloth, light wear to spine, faded, 8vo. Provenance: Lieut. J. Buckley V.C. (signature to title). Lieutenant John Buckley (1813-1876) was awarded the Victoria Cross ‘For Gallant defence of the magazine at Delhi’. During the 1857 Indian Mutiny, Buckley and eight other soldiers defended the Delhi magazine (munitions store). Vastly outnumbered, he decided to blow up the building (and themselves) rather than let the ammunition fall into the mutineers hands, miraculously surviving along with three others. Upon capture, he learnt his entire family had been killed by the rebels, and no longer caring for his own life, later escaped and volunteered for all manner of dangerous missions. He returned to England in 1858, and was awarded the VC from the Queen. A blue commemorative plaque is sited at the Travellers Call, Stalybridge and his Victoria Cross is at the Royal Army Ordnance Corps Museum, Camberley. (1)

A Map of the Parish of Purton in the County of Wilts., Finished in the Year of our Lord 1744, red & black ink on paper, laid on linen, ornate cartouche, mileage scale and table of explanation of the named houses, simple compass rose, some later pencil annotations, some dust soiling and staining, occ. closed tears and one small hole to image, mounted on later turned and stained wooden batons, 920 x 1670mm, an unusually large and detailed plan, together with, Ordnance Survey (pubs.), Map of South Gloucestershire and part of North Wiltshire, 1817 [but later]engraved map with orig. outline colouring, on six sheets conjoined, laid on linen, image size 1510 x 1350mm, mounted with contemp. turned stained baton at base, with circular brass ring and toggle to facilitate unrolling, the whole on a spring loaded brass roller attached to flat wooden baton for wall mounting. The Parish map of Purton shows the property of Neville Maskelyne, the astronomer royal, who is buried in Purton churchyard. (2)
