A .65” Indian Native Police percussion carbine, 37” overall, smooth bore barrel 21” with London and ordnance proofs and plain block backsight, the lock stamped with a crown and “Barnett, London”, walnut fullstock, the butt stamped “6/1891” and with Allahabad Arsenal mark, short saddle bar and ring on left, swivel ramrod, nipple protector and chain. a group of twelve very rare military incendiary quoites (pechkrŠnzen),16th / second quarter of the 17th century each formed of twisted bands of straw, hay, horsehair and fiberous cord in a hardened mixture of sulphur, saltpetre and tar, two of a thicker and pronounced donut shape (some with unstable age deterioration) (12) Incendiary quoites of this type would have been commonly included in the ordnance of castles and zeughŠuser throughout the broad sphere of the Empire; very few have survived. Similar examples are recorded in the armouries of the Veste Coberg and of the Princes Esterhazy at Schloss Frakn-er (Hungary).

A good .62" late model Baker flintlock rifle, 46" overall, twist barrel 301/4" with Tower proofs and folding rearsight, flat lock with bevelled ring neck cock, the plate engraved with crowned "GR" and "Tower"; walnut fullstock with original dark varnished finish, the butt stamped with ordnance store keeper's mark and "IV C R", the fore end with ramrod slit, standard pattern brass mounts, including rounded patch box cover; sling swivels; steel ramrod; fitted with a later leather sling. Untouched Condition, retaining some original browned finish to barrel (action requires attention, light surface rust to barrel, minor defects to stock, including small fracture below lock); (Please see lot 189 for image)
A WORKSPLATE "Andrew Barclay Sons & Co. Limited Caledonia Works No.349.1941. Kilmarnock". As carried by the 80 H.P. 0-4-0 diesel mechanical that emerged from works on 25th January 1941 going new to the M.O.D's Royal Ordnance Factory at Puriton as their "No.2". In May 1957 it went to Abelson at Sheldon, Birmingham; in April 1959 to Haunchwood Brick & Tile Co. Ltd, Warwickshire; in June 1968 to Llanddulas Limeworks & Quarries, Llysfaen Limeworks, and to Mr D.G. Owen of Llandudno by November 1974. Oval cast brass, 163/4"x113/4", face-polished and repainted only.
Cadogan (William, first earl of, 1675 - 1726). Signed document, 24th September 1722, appointing John Croome as labourer for His Majesty's Ordnance, countersigned L. Smett, circular tear around paper seal at head of document, folio, [upon the death of the Duke of Marlborough in June 1722, Cadogan had succeeded to the post of master - general of the ordnance], together with Temple (Henry John, third viscount Palmerston, 1784 - 1865, prime minister), autograph note signed, 4th May 1844, to W.M. Dinsdale thanking him for his communication, 1 page, 8vo, plus a third person letter from Lord Aylmer, requesting that M. Meurice of the Hotel Meurice, Paris, will receive his nephew and 'provide him with a sleeping room', with integral address panel, signed Lord Aylmer, 22nd Decembr 1825, 1 page, 4to (3)

HARDY, THOMAS (1840-1928). Three A.Ls.S., 1894 and 1914, and an undated part T.L.S., to Lucy Clifford , from Max Gate and Pelham Crescent, 6pp., 8vo., two of them concerning arrangements for a visit; the longest (4pp., 1914) referring to a theatrical production of The Dynasts, and also offering advice about a play outline sent to him by Lucy. “I have not the vaguest idea of what effect it would have if written at length & staged …a play of anybody’s from Shakespeare downwards is more vivid when read than when acted… As to the central conception – that the Krupps, or a woman – Krupp, might bring peace to the world by controlling its ordnance – it is naturally attractive in itself, especially to me, but as the theme of a practical drama which has to draw people to a theatre & make them pay: well, I am in the dark altogether”. With two A.Ls.S., from Florence Hardy, about her husband’s health (1921) and replying to Lucy’s letter after his death (1928) (6)
EDWARD FACON WATSON, By and After Lea Castle Worcestershire two, lithograph in colours, arched top 56 x 76cm, with seven Ordnance Survey Maps relevant to the Lea Castle Estate, scale 1/2500 or 1/10560, 1883 & 1891: with reference sheet, in contemporary portfolio, lettered in gold on a red label LEA CASTLE ESTATE (9) Lea Castle, Wolverley near Kidderminster, Worcestershire was built by the iron master Edward Knight in 1818, who remodelled the earlier house. A kinsman of the antiquary, collector and author, Richard Payne Knight of Downton Castle the house was later sold to the Brown-Westhead family. Two drawings of Lea Castle by James Ward and a collection of picturesque landscape watercolours by C W Bampfylde (see lot 758) a friend of Knight, from Knight's collection were sold in these 'rooms ( ) All in fine clean condition, portfolio with old localised damp stains.
