A collection of twenty two silk cards: Royal Hussars (2), Army Ordnance Corps, Royal Navy, Royal West Sussex, The Buffs, Royal Engineers, Medical Corps (3), Pay Corps, Service Corps (2), Rifle Brigade, Artillery, East Surrey, R.S.P.C.A. Auxiliary AVC, and 'England for Ever'. Two with envelopes, a number with messages to the reverse *Condition: All with nice strong colours, occasional spotting but generally well chosen examples.
With a 74.5cm slightly curved blade with fuller and spear point, the blade sharpened for active service and etched with a battleship, Imperial Reichs Crown over a fouled anchor, all amongst scrolling foliage. The guard with double folding inner and outer sections, the larger with fouled anchor, all with further scrolling foliage, with an ivory grip with wire binding, the pommel with lion's head set with red and greed eyes. Mounted with a second World War Kriegsmarine sword knot. The leather scabbard with engraved brass mounts, with twin ring suspension loops. With a black leather sword belt and twin hangers with Reichsmarine buckle marked for A.W. & S. Berlin. The grip engraved internally 'M. Tikrem C.L.' (?) and 'Dohnka'. 89cm overall. With copied research and images of some of Dohnka's ships. Research accompanying the sword suggests that Dohnka relates to Emil Dohnke who was born on the 22nd May 1879, he joined the Imperial Navy in 1896 as an artillery mechanic being promoted to the officer's rank of Lieutenant Ordnance Specialist (Feuerwerks-Leutnenat) on the 19th July 1911. He served in the artillery department of the Imperial Shipyard (Kaiserliche Werft) in Kiel and on the 22nd March 1914 he was promoted to Feuerwerks-Oberleutnant (Lieutenant Senior Grade). Following the beginning of the First World War he was posted to the ammunition depot of the German Navy Corps in Flanders. He appears to have retired from active service on the 30th October 1915 retiring from the Navy in 1918. By July 1st 1934 he had rejoined the Reichsmarine as a Lieutenant Commander and Erganzungs-Offizer (Supplement Officer), a branch of the Navy created for specialists in Artillery, Mine Sweeping or Torpedo operation. He remained at the Naval Arsenal in Kiel rising to the rank of Fregattenkapitan (Commander Senior Grade). He seems to have left the Navy at this time and celebrated his 100th birthday in Hamburg in 1979. A photocopied report of his 100th birthday celebrations is included with copied research relating to this combatant from the First and Second World Wars . A Cites License has been applied for MUVZ2SVW *Condition: Repair to split in scabbard, part of wire grip binding lacking, some light marking to blade.

Marked to the ricasso for Reeves Creaves & Co. sword manufacturer to Her Majestys Honble Board of Ordnance and the Honble East India Compy Charlotte Birm.'. With a three bar hilt, short forward facing quillon, wire bound grip and stepped oval pommel. With steel scabbard with twin ring suspension. 108cm overall *Condition: Light dents and scuffs to scabbard, light rubbing and surfacxe degradation to blade, generally a good early sword.

The shrapnel shell is named after Lieutenant-General Henry Shrapnel (1761-1842), a British officer who devised the hollow, gunpowder-filled ball that was fused to explode either in the air or on the ground with the resulting ball fragments proving to be an effective anti-personnel weapon; later types were filled with lead musket balls and powder to make the weapon even more effective against troops; such projectiles were used both with field artillery cannon and with mortars. Sold with original service papers, torpedo and gunnery record and certificate of service. Three copy pictures of the recipient and copies of his birth and marriage certificates are included. Thomas Edward Collins was born in Maidenhead on the 22nd of December 1867. He joined the Royal Navy on his 18th birthday as a Boy 2nd Class; in civilian life, he worked as a Labourer. Collins progressed up the ranks quickly; by 1894, he was a Petty Officer 1st Class. While serving on HMS Excellent in 1901, he was awarded the Long Service Good Conduct Medal. During the Boer War, Collins served on HMS Monarch; interestingly, one of the pictures shows Collins posing with a rifle; the picture looks to have been taken in South Africa. On the 23rd of December 1905, he was pensioned to shore and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve. Collin served on HMS Victory and HMS Arethusa during World War One. At the time of the 1939 census, he was living in Kent. He was listed as a 'Naval Ordnance Examiner Retired.'

Stanley Victor Chadwick was born in Elmesthrofie, Leicestershire, on the 22nd of March 1892. At the time of the 1911 census, he was living with his family in Morecambe, Lancashire and was working as an assistant to a photographer. During the Great War, he served in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps in Salonika, arriving there on the 20th of November 1915. He rose to the rank of Temporary Sub Conductor by the end of the war and was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal, gazetted on the 30th of January 1919. At the time of the 1939 census, Victor worked as an accountant and lived in Hampshire. When WW2 broke out, he was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. He served at home for the duration of the war. Victor passed away in 1973.

Sold with three sets of miniatures, with a photograph of the recipient; condition EF Anthony B Chadwick was born in Hampshire in 1935. Called up for National Service, he was given a commission in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. He saw active service during the Suez Crisis and was awarded a GSM 'Near East'. After leaving regular service, he spent many years with the Territorial Army. Awarded the T & AVR Officers Decoration on the 16th of September 1969. 1st bar, 5.11.74, 2nd bar, 1.6.81 and 3rd bar 24.2.87. He retired as Major on the 10th of May 1988.

A small collection of 18th and 19th Century Royal Naval ordnance relics, comprising, a roved copper retaining bar and grape shot salvaged from the wreck of H.M.S. Colossus (wrecked 1798-99), accompanied by a letter of provenance; together with a 24 pound cannon ball, a four pound ball, a hollow shot or grenade with threaded aperture for filling and fuse, and four other grape shot. [9]H.M.S. Colossus was a 74 gun thrd rate ship of the line launched in 1787. She fouht in the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797, and was wrecked off the Scilly Isles in the winter of 1798-99.
Charles Turner after Sir Joshua Reynolds, mezzotint, 'The Most Noble George Markie Townshend', published by Charles Turner, 1807, visible sheet 68.5 x 42cm Field Marshal George Townshend, 1st Marquess Townshend, PC (28 February 1724 – 14 September 1807), known as The Viscount Townshend from 1764 to 1787, was a British soldier and politician. After serving at the Battle of Dettingen during the War of the Austrian Succession and the Battle of Culloden during the Jacobite Rising, Townshend took command of the British forces for the closing stages of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham during the Seven Years' War. He went on to be Lord Lieutenant of Ireland or Viceroy where he introduced measures aimed at increasing the size of Irish regiments, reducing corruption in Ireland and improving the Irish economy. In cooperation with Prime Minister North in London, he solidified governmental control over Ireland. He also served as Master-General of the Ordnance, first in the North Ministry and then in the Fox–North Coalition.

Marriott, boards rubbed and marked, 8vo, together with A List of the Officers of the Army, Ordinance, and Medical Departments, serving under the Presidency of Fort St. George, 1821, text interleaved with blanks, modern dark blue quarter calf gilt, incorporating original blue boards with printed title label to upper cover, and inscription to upper cover 'John Binny Esq., with Messrs. Binny & Co's., Compts. No 25 Upper Winpole Stree, London', covers rubbed and marked, 8vo, plus nine further Madras Army Lists, for 1829, 1836, 1850, 1857, 1859, 1862, 1872, 1877, 1879, all except three bound in modern dark blue or black half calf gilt, (army lists for 1836, 1850, and 1877 bound in contemporary red half calf, generally with some wear), mainly large 8voQTY: (12)NOTE:The Madras Army list for 1829 has a contemporary ownership signature of Captain Burnell Jones of Barnstaple, Devonshire, dated Colombo 30th November 1829, to front endpaper. The 1836 volume has a pencil signature of J. J. Sherwood to front pastedown and endpaper, and contains contemporary ink annotations and corrections to the text, the 1859 volume is inscribed Aggertant-Generals Offices, and dated February 1859 to front blank. The 1862 volume contains a handwritten letter from William Thomas, Superintendent of the Assylum Press, addressed to Colonel J. G. E. B. Henry at Trichinopoly, dated Madras, 10th February 1862. The 1877 volume contains the ownership signature to title-page of J.B. Knocker dated 9/7/77, and with contemporary news cuttings related to Lieutenant Knocker's appointments loosely inserted at front of volume.
