Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA (1769-1830) Portrait of a gentleman, believed to be William Wellesley-Pole, 3rd Earl of Mornington (1763-1845) Oil on canvas in a period Carlo Maratta frame 76 x 63.5cm; 30 x 25in Painted c.1810-1815, The stretcher is incised Brown, High Holborn Provenance: Entered Christie~s London for appraisal 8th March 1921 (541 DH) by Eva Charlotte Yorke Long, Clairville, Wray Common Road, Reigate. Her great grandfather was Edward Bligh (1797-1872) who was the brother-in-law of Helena Paterson/Bligh who became the second wife of the sitter~s son, William Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley, 4th Earl of Mornington (1788-1857) Private English Collection Private St. Louis Collection, USA who donated in 1970s to: The H. Leslie Perry Library, Henderson, North Carolina Private English Collection William Wellesley-Pole was the brother of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and Richard Colley Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley. He was an Anglo-Irish politician and in 1821 was created 1st Baron Maryborough. He held various offices including Master of the Mint and Postmaster-General, he was also Clerk of the Ordnance around the time of the Battle of Trafalgar. On his death in 1845 his son William inherited his titles. Both Wellesley-Pole~s brothers had portraits painted by Lawrence.
A .56” Tower Sea Service or Coast Guard percussion pistol, barrel 6” with ordnance proofs partly obliterated by Government sale marks, the Lovell’s pattern lock bearing crown over “V-R/ Tower 1843”, the walnut fullstock having regulation pattern brass mounts, lanyard loop, and swivel ramrod. GWO & clean condition (the lock a replacement, probably from a Lovell’s 1842 pattern musket). Plate 10
A German officer’s 6 shot 10.6mm CF M/79 SA ordnance revolver, 13” overall, round barrel 7” with muzzle ring and octagonal breech, number 2004, the frame dated 1882 and stamped “F.v. Dreyse, Sommerda” in oval, nickel plated overall and with later non regulation chequered walnut grips. GWO & C (plating worn, one grip chipped, no lanyard ring). Plate 11
A .577/450” Martini Henry Mark IV rifle, 49½”, barrel 33¼”, the breech having ordnance proofs and Enfield inspectors marks, the frame engraved with crwon over “VR/Enfield/ IV/I” and numbered “B/672”, fullstocked with sling swivels and correct type steel ramrod. GWO & basically GC (slightly worn overall, ramrod slightly damaged, rear sling swivel replaced). Plate 9
A scarce WWI leather holster and shoulder stock for an Artillery Luger automatic pistol, the flap stamped “1916/ G Rothmund & Co/ Hamburg” and regimental stamp “B.A. IV”, the walnut stock bearing ordnance mark and numbered 1663a, with leather straps and harness. GC (some wear to leather straps, no stripping tool or cleaning rod)
A French 11mm Mle 1866 Chassepot needle fire military rifle, 51½” overall, barrel 32½”, the breech dated “1868”, numbered H74816 on all parts, the action engraved “Manufacture Imperiale St Etienne”, the walnut fullstock having January 1869 ordnance mark on the butt, steel mounts, sling swivels and cleaning rod. GWO & C (light bruising to the stock). Plate 9
An Indian 12 bore military style percussion musket, 49” overall, barrel 33½” with rifle type rearsight and stamped with arsenal type letters and numbers, the British lock stamped with ordnance viewer’s mark and “H.H.G.S”, fullstocked with two barrel bands, large brass trigger guard with spurred grip, single sling swivel and steel ramrod. WO & QGC, with its triangular socket bayonet (worn)
