A Collection of Militaria and Ephemera, relating to 5662368 Anthony Richard Williams, including brass buttons, badges, 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Service and Pay Books, Certificates of Service, Release Book, photographs, letters and postcards, canvas sewing kit rolls etc. He was born in 1901 and enlisted into the Army, joining the Somerset Light Infantry in 1918, where he served for a total of twelve years, being discharged in 1930. He rejoined in 1931 with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, and later transferred to REME.
VANE HENRY: (1613-1662) The Younger. English Statesman during the English Civil War. Vane was tried for High Treason and executed on Tower Hill. D.S., H. Vane, one page, folio, n.p., 19th January 1643. The manuscript document was issued following an ordnance by Parliament ‘for the raysing of money for the better enabling of our Brethren of Scotland for our assistance & defence in this Common cause of our religion & Liberty…it is….ordained that the Committee of Parliament & Citty of London appointed for this service, shall have power to name in each County three or more persons of rank & integrity’ and nominating the Mayor and Sheriffs of Norwich, the Mayor of Lynn, the Bailiffs of Yarmouth ‘to put the said Ordnance in execution in the County of Norfolke’. Signed by Vane at the foot and countersigned by five others including William Spurstowe (c.1605-1666) English Clergyman, a member of the Westminster Assembly and Oliver St. John (c.1598-1673) English Statesman and Judge. With blank integral leaf. Some very light overall age toning, otherwise VG
SCARLETT JAMES YORKE: (1799-1871) British General, a hero of the Crimean War. Scarlett led the charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaclava. A.L.S., J. Yorke Scarlett, with rank beneath, three pages, 8vo, Crimea, 26th September 1855, to Sir Hew Ross. Scarlett announces `I am very anxious to submit to your notice the name of First Lieutenant Frederick Lyon of the Royal Artillery as a candidate for the Horse Artillery knowing him to be a clever & splendid young man & one who would I think be a credit to that beautiful branch of your service.` The General continues `You will be happy to hear that the Horse Artillery attached (to) our Cavalry are looking very well & do us great credit though we have not had an opportunity of bringing them into action this summer except a few shots fired by the C Troop on the 16th at the enemy.` Scarlett continues to refer to other military matters and in concluding confesses to being jealous of a Troop of Horse Artillery being attached to the Infantry, `but I concluded the arrangement is all for the best & good of the service`. A letter of fine content. Attractively and professionally matted in deep red alongside a brief printed biography and an oval engraving of Captain Nolan. Framed and glazed (to both sides to show each page of the letter) in a silver coloured frame to an overall size of 15 x 17.5. A George III mahogany cistern tube stick barometer George Adams, London, circa 1770 The rectangular brass vernier register (previously silvered) calibrated in inches with the usual observations and signed Made by G. Adams, Fleet Street, LONDON, Instrument Maker To His MAJESTY, above caddy moulded trunk with exposed tube and hemispherical cistern cover to the rounded base with level adjustment screw to underside, 98cm (3ft 2.5ins) high overall. George Adams was born circa 1704, he became free of the Clockmakers Company in 1754 and quickly established himself as one of the leading Instrument makers of the period being particularly well known for his globes and microscopes. In 1753 he advertised himself as `Instrument Maker to His Majest`ys Office of Ordnance` and subsequently was appointed Instrument Maker to the Prince of Wales later George III, several instruments made by Adams can now be seen in the George III collection at The Science Museum, London. George Adams died in 1772 leaving the business to his son also called George who also inherited the royal appointment. The current lot was probably made by George Adams senior towards the end of his career and according to the price list published in the 1769 second edition of his treatise would have cost £2-2s.

London 1888, and a similar bamboo riding crop, band HM H & S London 1952. GC
