A DERBY BOTANICAL DISH FROM THE POWIS DESSERT SERVICE painted with two specimens and two green leaves, the rim in dark brown enamel, 29cm w, painted mark, 139 and titles Jacob`s Ladder and Butterfly Orchis in blue script, c1793 Provenance: Commissioned by Richard Norman of Leatherhead, Surrey in 1792. He married, in 1798, Lady Elizabeth Manners, eldest daughter of the 4th Duke of Rutland; bequeathed by the husband of one of her daughters, the Hon Rev Atherton Legh Powys in 1871 to his eldest daughter Evelyn Mary, Mrs Wade Brown, with direction that it was to be left to her brother, Arthur Littleton Powys, or his heir. The source prints for the Jacob`s ladder and Butterfly orchis were published in the 1790 volume of English Botany by James Sowerby (1757-1819). This unusual service, with its dark brown rims is discussed in the Paper by A P Ledger, Derby Botanical Dessert Services A Research Study, Derby Porcelain Society Journal 2. A fine exhibition standard 3 1/2 inch gauge model of British Railways Class 9F 2-10-0 tender locomotive `Evening Star`, 92220, the copper super-heated boiler with fittings including water sight glass, twin pressure gauges, regulator, wheel operated reverse screw, lever-operated sliding firebox doors, cab-operated drain cocks, safety valves, blower, injector, brakes, whistle, and clack valve, the chassis detail including twin outside cylinders of 1 1/4 inch bore by 1 3/4 inch stroke, with Walschaerts valve gear to piston valves, fluted motion, smoke deflectors, ratchet driven lubricator, eccentric driven water pump, whistle, brake gear, rivet-work, steps, hand rails and lamp irons, the six-wheel 5000 gallon tender with fittings including hand-operated feed pump, steps, hand rails, lamp irons and rear ladder, finished in lined green with polished bright-work, 127cm long, the cab 17cm wide; presented in a glazed brass display case, the mahogany base fitted with a length of track.
