SIR JAMES JEBUSA SHANNON R.A., R.B.A., P.R.S.P.P. (1862-1923)Portrait of Kittystanding full length, wearing a white dress and hatoil on canvas72 1/2 x 40 in (184.2 x 101.7cm)Provenance: The artist's family, by descent; thence to the present vendor's familyIn this portrait Shannon's limited colour palette, thinly washed paint surface and flattened compositional space shows the influence of WhistlerThis full length portrait of Shannon's only child Kitty (1887-1974) can be compared with an 1897 full length portrait of her in the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh. A variant portrait of that was exhibited at The Royal Academy of Arts, Winter Exhibition 1928 no. 23 Shannon initially studied under Sir Edward Poynter Bt. PRA., and increasingly turned his attention to portraiture. He was a founding member of the Society of Portrait Painters in 1891. The purpose of this Society was to display and promote the variety of portraits available from a younger generation of portrait painters. Over the next few years Shannon's profile rose rapidly. Along with John Singer Sargent, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Shannon was considered by Munsey's Magazine in 1895 to be one of the three most 'distinguished American portrait painters to have flourished side by side in this generation among the mists and glooms of London'By the mid 1890's Shannon was at the height of his powers, elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1897. An American commentator of the time recorded 'As to Mr Shannon, his career in England has been simply phenomenal. Almost unknown three or four years ago he has, with his grace, elegance and refinement climbed to the very top of the ladder'
