Italian Binding.- Uffizio della Settimana Santa, pp. 309-14 small defect upper fore-edge corner with some text loss and pp.315-22 small closed tear no text loss, contemporary calf, decoratively tooled in gilt, with representations of the Arma Christi [instruments of the Passion] and other motifs of the Crucifixion, g.e., spine head with small tear, some very light scuffing, Rome, by Luigi Perego Salvioni, 1803.⁂ The motifs of the Passion include: the rooster which crowed after Peter's third denial; Christ's seamless robe; the dice with which the soldiers cast lots for his robe; a pair of ?plyers and hammer; the Holy Lance that pierced Christ's side; the sponge set on a reed and soaked in gall and vinegar, and a ladder, commonly associated with the deposition of Christ's body. These appear at the cover corners and on the spine.
