Circa 3000 BC. A carved marble seal with frieze of animals; accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: Cylinder Seal of Pink Marble, 25 x 21mm. There is a loop on top of this seal for carrying by a string. The design shows two horned animals in a row, the bodies deeply gouged. There is a ladder-pattern above the back of the one, and behind the other a pattern of lines. This is a Jemdet Nasr seal, c. 3000 B.C., from Mesopotamia. It is in fine condition. This lot is part of a single collection of cylinder seals which were examined in the 1980s by Professor Lambert and most are accompanied by his own detailed notes; the collection has recently been reviewed by Dr. Ronald Bonewitz 16 grams, 25mm (1"). Property of a London gentleman; aquired in the late 1970s and 1980s. Fine condition.
Later 6th century AD. A substantial gold cruciform pendant with four hollow bottle-shaped arms, each with incised median line to front and back; to the obverse, a discoid plaque with central cell, four radiating pellet triangles, inset cabochon garnet; similar plaque to the reverse with single pellets; substantial ribbed loop above; gold ladder chain with ribbed tubular finials, hook and eye closure. Accompanied by an Art Loss Register certificate. Cf. Ross M.C. Catalogue of the Byzantine and Early Mediaeval Antiquities in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection, Volume 2: Jewelry, Enamels and Art of the Migration Period, Washington, 2005, item 179 (I). Supplied with a positive X-Ray Fluorescence analysis certificate. 60 grams total, pendant: 52mm, chain: 69cm (Pendant: 2, chain: 27 1/4"). From an important London collection, acquired in the 1970s. "Fine condition, lower arm bent."
3rd century AD. A large bronze Baltic bow brooch of the 'ladder brooch' type of ogee profile; the headplate trapezoidal with lateral loops and lugs to attach the prominently placed spring, central recess with red enamel infill; the bow with transverse herringbone detail, wide transverse bar at the apex with herringbone pattern to the centre, keeled concave extension to a second similar transverse bar, flared footplate with central enamel-filled panel, ropework (?) detailing; large catchplate to the reverse. Cf. ladder brooches in Griciuviene, E. Seliai. The Selonians, Vilnius, 2007, item 507. 70 grams, 10.5cm (4"). From an old Munich collection; acquired on the German art market before 2000. NEP under ladder rear sight, serial no. 2610, with socket bayonet ramrod and original black leather sling, bayonet, sling and trigger-guard with other stamped marks, Deactivation Certificate DA 32573 (October 1992), weapon with cock and dry fire, 126cm overall length CONDITION REPORT Barrel has been obstructed, for deactivation but there are no external signs of this eg no cuts or welding. Mechanism works smoothly
Scarce deactivated Thompson 1927 A1 .45 ACP semi-automatic carbine 'Tommy Gun', with long ribbed barrel, Lyman rear 'ladder' sight and Cutt's type compensator, fully marked including US Patents Manufactured by Auto-Ordnance Corporation West Hurley New York U.S.A., serial no. 6580 Deactivation Certificate DA 0961 (April 1989), together with spare fore grip and original Thompson oil bottle in butt cavity, weapon with strip, cock and dry fire, 102cm overall length CONDITION REPORT Mechanism works smoothly. Some scratching to wood but no splits. Metalwork has no pitting and retains original finish. Overall good condition
