Ca. 1400 - 1300 BCAn elegant wheel-thrown Mycenaean pottery jar known as a pithos with a petite discoid base which gradually expands into an inverted piriform body with a sloped shoulder and a squat neck. The jar has a trio of applied loop handles spaced equidistantly around the shoulder. An attractive red-brown colour is applied atop the cream-slipped base in concentric rings of varying widths around the foot, lower body, and rim. An intersecting ladder-form bar motif is painted across the shoulder. For similar see. For condition, please see the photos - as seen there is significant corrosion and pitting. No further markings are visible beyond the number '683' to the lockplate and the WW / 68 factory markings, both also photographed. The barrel is rifled but the bore condition seems relatively poor. There may be some marks elsewhere but these are very difficult to discern due to the wear.
