PETER SNAYERS (Antwerp, 1592-Brussels, 1667)"The Siege of Bohemia.Oil on canvas. Re-tinted.It has restorations and repainting on the pictorial surface.Provenance: private collection conceived since the 1970s between London and Madrid.Measurements: 198 x 258 cm.Warlike image in which the scene is represented from a zenithal point of view as it is usual in Peter Snaryer's painting. Compositionally, the author reduces the area of the sky in such a way that he can create a panoramic view built in depth in which to arrange a large number of characters. Despite the profusion of elements; military camps, architecture, vegetation and characters, the author uses geometry in a masterly manner, creating an order that allows a coherent and calm reading. In order to arrive at this type of realistic and precise composition, Snayers relied on official military maps, reliable war reports and artistic inventions by other artists. His artistic sources included engravings by Georg Braun, Frans Hogenberg, Jacques Callot and works by Peter Paul Rubens.Peter Snayer was a Flemish painter known for his panoramic battle scenes, depictions of cavalry, attacks on villages, carriages and convoys, and hunting scenes, and he established his reputation primarily through his topographical battle scenes that provide a bird's-eye view of the battlefield. He also painted large landscapes and portraits of the aristocracy, and was a regular collaborator with local landscape painters and also with Rubens, and after beginning his career in Antwerp, he moved to Brussels, where he worked for the court. He was the leading military iconographer at the court of Brussels and the court painter appointed to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Snayers was enrolled as a pupil of Sebastiaen Vrancx at the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp in 1612. In 1613 Snayers became master of the Guild. He joined the painters' guild in Brussels on 16 June 1628. It is believed that he had been working for the Archduke Albert (d. 1621) while living in Antwerp. He had been appointed court painter and 'domesticq van 't Hof" (court domestic) by the Archduke. Snayers probably moved to Brussels to seek opportunities at the court of the Archduchess Isabella, the Archduke's widow and governess of the Southern Netherlands. After Isabella's death in 1633, Snayers became court painter to the next two governors, Cardinal Infante Ferdinand of Austria (1634-1641) and Archduke Leopold (William) (1647-1656). For them he painted victorious battle scenes in the tradition of 16th-century tapestries. He painted portraits of the Brussels aristocracy and large landscapes. He also worked for other eminent patrons and the open market. A highlight of his career was the commission for 22 battle paintings by General Ottavio Piccolomini, and he collaborated with Antwerp painters such as Peter Paul Rubens on several occasions, including on the unfinished cycle The Life of Henry IV (1628-30) and the series Tower of the Parade (c. 1637-1640). During both his Antwerp and Brussels periods, he mingled with the elite of his time. He climbed the social ladder and aspired to live a lifestyle similar to that of the aristocrats of his time. He was thus an example of the 'aristocratisation' of successful 17th century citizens. His pupils included Guilliam van Schoor and Adam Frans van der Meulen. The latter became a leading battle painter and court painter to Louis XIV of France. He painted portraits of the Brussels aristocracy and large landscapes. Stylistically, his colouring was more subdued than that of his master Vrancx and reflects contemporary trends in Flemish and Netherlandish painting. His large canvases clearly played a dual role: they documented the historical event and at the same time glorified the military men who took part in the action.

CHEMA MADOZ (Madrid, 1958)Untitled, 2000.Positive bromide virado. Copy 3/15.With the label of the Galería Moriarty (Madrid) on the back.Signed, dated and justified on the back.Provenance: private collection conceived since the 70s between London and Madrid.Measurements: 60 x 50 cm; 81 x 71,5 cm (frame). The Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid has the first copy of this series. In its cataloguing the museum states "In 1995 Madoz took a photograph of a real cactus planted in a sewing thimble. The association of the spiky plant with the thimble triggered in the observer the hypothetical effect of a finger entering the thimble. In this photograph the cactus has become stone. Madoz has replaced the fleshiness of the plant with the inert hardness of the boulders. He composes his objects, but never disguises the nature of each one. That thimble was perfectly legible as a thimble; in this photograph the pot and the stones are also fully identifiable. This play with the recognisable makes the effect of surprise provoked by the union of disparate and even antithetical elements even more intense, because it places us before concrete and familiar fragments of reality. The artist proposes a certain distancing from the motif captured, which generally appears with a carefully prepared mise-en-scène. This scenographic distancing is not objective, because it seeks to provoke subjective reactions from the gaze that the photographer and the camera have decided to fix on paper".Visual paradox is the fertile ground in which Chema Madoz moves. The way he interprets art through photography and his poetic vision make Madoz one of the most interesting, influential and recognisable creators on the contemporary art scene. Emphasising the irony that underlies the objects and the hidden relationships between them. In a surrealistic search for new meanings, through which to let the imagination wander towards new paths. Playing with the everyday, generating associations, metamorphoses, in a playful background, he generates a singular strangeness. His artistic work has been described as "analytical photography or visual trope" and his visual style as "surreal rationality or the logic of the oneiric", to refer to the compositions of objects that are the protagonists of his works - in the words of the philosopher and art historian Luis Arenas. Madoz manipulates, invents and photographs objects. Defined as a visual poet, the associations he develops from objects as commonplace as a key, a stone or a ladder lead to a torrent of creativity. In 1999 the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía presented the exhibition Madoz. Objects 1990-1999, the first solo exhibition that the museum dedicated to a living Spanish photographer. Internationally, he has exhibited at institutions such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam, the Fondazione M. Marangoni in Florence, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Caracas and the Multimedia Art Museum in Moscow. He has received the National Photography Prize and the PHotoEspaña Prize in 2000, and the Culture Prize of the Community of Madrid in the category of Photography in 2012, among others.

CHEMA MADOZ (Madrid, 1958)Untitled (Árbol Piedras), 2000.Positive bromide virado. Copy 3/15.With label on the back of the Galería Moriarty (Madrid).Signed, dated and justified on the back. Provenance: private collection conceived since the 70s between London and Madrid.Size: 60 x 50 cm; 81 x 71 cm (frame). The Telefónica Foundation dedicated an exhibition to the artist, called Telos. It brought together a selection of works from 2000 to 2004, dedicated to nature. This "Tree Stones" belonged to the aforementioned group of which the artist commented: "I have chosen a series of images with common interests: their axis is nature and for this reason they are more distant from other series of objects from everyday life. I also make use of matter that comes from nature itself and lacks that objectual character, be it grass, water or sand, in an attempt to access the idea of landscape in other images".The way he interprets art through photography and his poetic vision make Chema Madoz one of the most interesting, influential and recognisable creators on the contemporary art scene. Emphasising the irony that underlies the objects and the hidden relationships between them. One of nine cars built by Arnott's Garages in Harlesden, this JAP-engined 500 has been a regular in motorsport paddocks for over 70 years. The name of Arnott has long been associated with high-performance motoring and the manufacture of superchargers, so it’s a little ironic that the cars that bear the Arnott name were built for Formula 3 (500), a Formula that specifically excluded superchargers. Daphne Arnott was born into a family with a deep-rooted passion for motorsports, her grandfather ran the Werner Motorcycle Company and her father designed the Arnott Supercharger. Daphne joined the family business in 1948 and soon became equally passionate about motor racing which was just developing again after the war years. It was a trio of visits to Brands Hatch and a chance meeting with George Thornton that changed her life. George convinced her that atmospheric induction could still produce potent vehicles despite her family's belief that forced induction was the way forward. She was intrigued and enthusiastic about George’s ideas for a new Formula 3 car (lightweight tube-frame chassis powered by 500cc motorcycle engines) and committed to support his plans. Arnott’s management don’t appear to have been impressed, so it was up to Daphne and George to treat the whole thing as a private venture, however, they were able to reserve a corner of the company’s general garage section at Harlesdon to build the cars as long as they worked outside of normal working hours. The first car used a tubular ladder-frame with torsion-bar suspension and achieved some success both in racing as well as in breaking Class 1 records at Montlhery in 1953. A supercharged Austin A30-engined sports car was offered from 1954, and a 1,098cc Coventry-Climax model was introduced in time for the 1955 race at Le Mans. The Arnott 500 was intended for series-production and was aimed at the growing number of young drivers who were becoming interested in Formula 3.This well presented example of the Arnott 500 is fitted with a Jap 498cc engine mated to a 4-speed Norton clutch and gearbox driving the rear wheels, motorcycle-style, with a chain to the rear axle. It has the added benefit of being fitted with a self-starter, making this car extremely easy to run and obviating the need to push it around the paddock, trying to avoid everyone else doing the same thing, until it starts. The steering is rack and pinion and the car sits on period cast alloy 15'' wheels. It was originally campaigned in 1952 by R D Beenan and has been raced on circuits and Hill Climbs ever since. The car is well known in the 500 Owners Association who confirmed that it still retains its original chassis and has been very competitive over the years.A superb, early single seater which would undoubtedly be welcomed by the Half-Litre Car Club, the 500 Club and the 500 Owners Association.SpecificationMake: ARNOTTModel: 500 F3Year: 1952Chassis Number: 500/5Registration Number: N/ATransmission: ManualEngine Number: JOS/4075766/4Make: Click here for more details and images

Lot 442

Delightfully presented B-Spec ex-California car, now right-hand drive after a bespoke restoration. An unusual departure for a firm more noted for its stately limousines, the SP250 sports car was Daimler's final fling before its acquisition by Jaguar. Aimed at the North American market and launched in 1959, the model was initially named the Dart, however, that was subsequently dropped after the threat of legal action from the American giant, Chrysler who's Dodge division owned the rights to the Dart model name and, from this point onwards, Daimler would appoint the project number, SP250, as its model designation. The SP250 employed a separate ladder-type chassis on which sat controversially-styled fibreglass coachwork moulded by Daimler themselves. Four-wheel disc brakes were an unusual feature at the time but unquestionably the car's biggest virtue was its magnificent 2.5-litre V8 engine. An outstandingly flexible unit, the smaller of Daimler's two Edward Turner designed V8s produced 140bhp, an output good enough to propel the SP250 to a top speed of 125mph. In-keeping with the demands of its intended market, automatic transmission was available as an option.Early cars apparently suffered from a degree of ‘chassis flex’ and to address this the 'B-spec' version was fitted with extra chassis outriggers and a strengthening hoop between the A-posts. The later car also benefited from a number of detail improvements including an adjustable steering column. This lovely 'B-spec' example spent its early life in sunny California before returning to the UK in 2013, without engine and gearbox, and was immediately subject to a complete, body-off, photo-documented, five-year, bespoke restoration. It was converted to right-hand drive and fitted with a V8 250 saloon engine and BW35 automatic gearbox.Pretty is an adjective not normally associated with the ‘macho’ lines of the SP250 but, finished in a lush Bentley Verdant Green with a stylish parchment leather interior, the word may well apply to this attractive little Daimler. Other features include a desirable hardtop, figured walnut dashboard, chrome wires and Speedwell mirrors. Our vendor informs us that he’s also fitted a new mohair hood which has never been used. The car is accompanied by a workshop manual (correct engine and gearbox), parts manual, Heritage record and a wiring diagram. In period, the SP250 was regarded as rather quirky and its shape did divide opinion somewhat, however, with the passage of time, its 'futuristic' lines now look just right and the 'Dart' has evolved into a very desirable classic. SpecificationMake: DAIMLERModel: DARTYear: 1961Chassis Number: 100915Registration Number: 998 XVCTransmission: AutoEngine Number: 7A12546Drive Side: Right-hand DriveClick here for more details and images
