The fascinating diary of Captain John Beverly Edge, prisoner of war and escapee, Captain Beverly Edge was in the 231 Median Battery R.A. 67th Med. Regt R.A. Middle East Forces, when in 1942 he found himself at the Prisoner of War camp Campo Di Concentramento Fonte Dell Amore, when in 1943 the Italians had an armistice with the Allies, on hearing this Captain Beverly Edge along with six follow officers decided that fearing transportation to Germany they would escape into the roof of their dwellings, after removing bricks in the wall and by luck finding a ladder along with building a stronger floor in the roof the men crawled into the roof, after 19 days in the roof the men made the decision it was time to escape the camp, the men split into two groups Captain Beverly Edge's group managed to scale the fences and walls to then get a distance between themselves and the camp, only to be spotted within an olive grove by Germans and after shots were fired the men were re-caught and sent back, then taken to Sulmona station to be sent to Germany. The diary was written within a Christmas 1942 hymn book, the book was left by Captain Beverly Edge in the roof when they decided to escape, the diary is torn in half as he decided to destroy it, only to change his mind and hide it in the roof, the diary sat in the roof until 1962 after Captain Beverly Edge tried to find a way to see if it still existed, 75% of the camp had been torn down but with some careful searching amazingly the diary was found, the lot also comes with the corresponding Government and military letters detailing the search for the diary, his POW tag, photographs and a pen written recollection to go with the diary, silk maps and further letters
