Circle of DOMENICO FETTI (Rome, 1589 - Venice, 16 April 1623)"Jacob's Dream.Oil on canvas. Re-tinted.It has repainting, restorations on the pictorial layer and missing parts in the frame. It has a 19th century frame.Measurements: 78 x 51 cm; 92 x 65 cm (frame).Aesthetically the work follows the compositional and stylistic precepts of the painting by Dominico Fetti, which belongs to the collection of Domenico Fetti, and has the same title. The canvas narrates the mysterious dream of the patriarch Jacob who, according to Genesis, dreamt on the road to Haran of a heavenly ladder on which angels ascended and descended. This vision of Jacob narrated by the sacred text is usually interpreted as a symbol of the contemplative life, according to Benedictine interpretation. The Genesis account tells us that Jacob set out from Beer-sheba in the direction of Haran. By chance he came to a place and stayed there to spend the night, because the sun had already set. He took a stone from there, put it on as a pillow, and lay down to sleep in that place. And he had a dream: a stairway was leaning against the earth, with its top touching the sky. Angels of God were ascending and descending it. The Lord stood on it and said, "I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. The land on which you are lying, I will give it to you and your descendants. Your descendants will multiply like the dust of the earth, and you will occupy the east and the west, the north and the south; and all the nations of the world will be called blessed because of you and your descendants. I am with you; I will keep you wherever you go, and I will return you to this land and will not forsake you until I have fulfilled what I have promised." When Jacob awoke, he said, "Truly the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it." And, in awe, he added, "How terrible is this place; it is but the house of God and the gate of heaven."Domenico Fetti was a Roman-born artist who began his artistic education at the hands of his father, the renowned painter Pietro Fetti. He later continued his studies with Andrea Commodi and Lodovico Cigoli. His career took off thanks to the patronage of Ferdinando Gonzaga, who, following his appointment as Duke of Mantua, made the painter move to that city. His stay there brought him into contact with the paintings of great artists such as Rubens and Titian. In 1622 he moved to Venice with the support of important patrons. Fetti's painting was characterised by his experimentation with various genres such as portraiture, allegory, history and religion.

Lot 13

Martini Henry Sergeant Bates Volunteer .577/450 MkIII by P. Webley, of standard military pattern with 32inch barrel secured by two barrel bands one with bayonet lug, fitted with folding ladder sight, the barrel stamped and engraved Sgt. Bates from P Webley and Son Birmingham, as well as bearing the serial number 0069 or 6900, figured walnut stock, together with leather sling, brass muzzle cap and modern hard case.Sergeant Bates of the 1st (Birmingham) Volunteer Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment earned an outstanding and celebrated reputation as a marksman during the second half of the 19th century. His success found him a position at the Field Rifle Company as sighter and tester however by 1884 Bates was able to set up his own gunsmithing business. Here Bates was able to trade on his reputation setting up and accurising Martini Henry rifles provided by Field Rifle Company and P. Webley and son. For more information on Sergeant Bates and the provenance of this rifle please read our blog online by clicking on this link. 126cm long Condition report: The rifle is in very good condition and probably one of the best-conditioned volunteer Martini I have seen. There is minor marks as you would expect from an old rifle but these are refreshingly kept to a minimum. The brass muzzle cap has left some marks to the barrel. The action works correctly and the bore is excellent.

Lot 14

Enfield Snider .577 breech loading carbine, 21.5 inch barrel fitted with bayonet lug and folding ladder sight, mkII ** breech, Crown VR 1868 dated lock, the butt plate tang stamped with unit mark R.A.A.M 85, the butt with Enfield roundle and 6.74 issue date. Section 58(2) antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a license. 101cm longCondition report: The gun has a dark overall patina and could do with a good overhaul and clean up to look its best. There is very light pitting throughout which has turned the bluing a plum colour. The inside of the breech has some fresh corrosion spots. The bore has a fair amount of pitting throughout with some heavy patches close to the muzzle. Whist the rifling pattern remains clear in most areas, the pitting is too deep to clean out. The Snider has been on licence in the past and fired. There are signs of cleaning fluid that has run out of the action and down the buttstock. The stock is free from repairs or splits but has the usual knocks, marks and dents. There are the signs of vice teeth to the stock just ahead of the action.

Lot 21

Enfield Martini Henry MkII .577/450 rifle, 32inch barrel fitted with ladder rear sight and secured by two bands incorporating bayonet lug, Crown VR 1885 dated action, together with socket bayonet and scabbard and leather sling.Section 58(2) antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence.125cm long Condition report: The bore is good with strong rifling and only minor pitting specs. The metalwork generally is good with a dark plum colour where the finish is fading in places. The stock is a similar very dark patina, there is a small piece of wood spliced in around the cross pin joint at close to the action. The butt stock has a small fitted repair around the comb area. The butt has been weathered significantly and is a lot more worn than the rest of the rifle appears. The butt plate stands out proud around the edges as he butt itself has shrunk. The bayonet has some heavy pitting to the cutting edges. The scabbard leather shows signs of wear throughout.

Lot 22

Enfield .577 Snider artillery carbine, 21.5inch barrel fitted with folding ladder sight attached with two barrel bands one with bayonet bar, MkII * breech, stock with Enfield roundell and the butt plate numbered 46.Section 58(2) antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence.102cm long

Section 58(2) antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence. 128cm long Condition report: The action works but it is not as positive as it could be. The bore is good with only the odd spot. The cleaning rod has been replaced. The metalwork has been refinished and currently is a flat matt black finish. The lock has been polished bright. The breechblock has been left as it was but has some pitting. The butt stock is covered in a strange black paint and looks to be hiding a repair. The butt plate screws have been replaced. One trigger guard screw has been damaged with a cross-cut. Overall this gun has seen a hard life.

Lot 32

Pattern 1842 percussion .750 rifle musket, 30inch barrel with three groove rifling, fitted with folding ladder sights and stamped with sold out of service marks, Crown VR Tower lock with original date of 1857 and overstruck date of 1877, the stock stamped W III C.R. together with the correct pattern bayonet.Section 58(2) antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence.117cm long Condition report: The gun is in sleeper condition and has a dark overall patina which with sympathetic cleaning could improve considerably. The stock has the usual collection of dents, marks and scratches. There is a short split to the stock close to the side nails. There are small damages around the barrel and ramrod pins holes where wood has chipped from the removal of parts. The action works correctly with a very strong spring and the hammer is tight on the tumbler. The nipple and surrounding area are badly corroded and perhaps want replacing. The bore has pitting similar to the exterior of the gun but strong rifling pattern still remains.
