Joan Miró (1893 Barcelona - 1983 Palma)Komposition mit FigurVerworfene Illustration zu dem 1961 im Rowohlt-Verlag in Reinbek bei Hamburg erschienenen Hardcover-Buch von Henry Miller "Das Lächeln am Fuße der Leiter", für das Miró außer den Illustrationen im Textteil auch die Vorsatzpapiere, den Einband und den Schutzumschlag gestaltete. Der katalanisch-spanische Maler, Grafiker, Bildhauer und Keramiker gehört zu den international bedeutendsten Künstlern der Klassischen Moderne. Ausgehend vom Kubismus und Fauvismus fand er in den 1920er Jahren durch den Dadaismus und Surrealismus zu seinen fantasievollen, farbigen Bildmotiven zwischen Figuration und Abstraktion. Seine zeichenhaften, magischen Symbole - Mond, Sterne, Vögel, Augen und Figuren - ließen ihn zugleich zu einem der populärsten Künstler des 20. Jhs. werden. 1920-1940 lebte und arbeitete Miró größtenteils in Paris, wo er bereits in den 1920er Jahren neben Ernest Hemingway auch Henry Miller kennenlernte, dessen Buch "Das Lächeln am Fuße der Leiter" ("The Smile at the Foot of the Ladder") er dann fast vierzig Jahre später 1961 illustrieren sollte.
