A late 18th Century Chinese porcelain baluster shaped vase, the main body polychrome decorated with birds and butterflies amongst blossoming foliage raised on a circular foot 16 cm high together with a prunus blossom decorated ginger jar (no lid) 12.5 cm high, an Imari scallop edged bowl decorated with various fish, crayfish etc 18.5 cm diameter and a willow pattern transfer decorated leaf shaped pickle dish 13 cm x 10.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS The polychrome vase has some losses to the decoration, chips to the glaze at the bottom edge and the top rim. General surface scratches, firing faults etc. The pickle dish is heavily crazed. All items have general wear and tear to include some surface scratches etc. All in need of a very good clean, filthy. A pair of large Chinese porcelain Imari style chargers18th centurythe central roundels enclosed by chrysanthemums, scrolling foliage and stylised flowerheads, undersides with floral sprays to each side and central marks within blue double rings, (2)39cm diam.Condition: One example in good condition with minor nibbles to some edges. Some rubbing to gilt and other areas of red. The other example with an 8cm hairline crack and a 3cm crack with chip at its onset. There is also a large old repair 20cm long and 7cm deep into the charger. Some nibbles to edges in places.

A Victorian Imari patterned cheese dish with cover. (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: There is a significant hairline crack to the cheese dish cover. This is on the interior of the lid and runs to at least 4 - 5 cm. Overall the rest of the structure is sound. There is plenty of rubbing and wear to the Imari pattern, pitting to the surface in places and area of ingrained dirt. The base is structurally intact with some craquelure and crazing to the top, this is embedded with brown staining. The base has occasional areas of wear to its rim.

Cooke CollectionThe collection was started in the 1920s by Phil’s father – who bought at that time from Sir Algernon Tudor-Craig, the eminent London dealer and first author of a book on armorial wares, from his gallery ‘The Century House’ in Knightsbridge, which closed around 1929. Phil continued collecting, buying much from the collector/dealer Cecil Bullivant, and by the 1960s, his collection had become the largest in the world. My late husband first met him in the late ’50s, and his first volume of Chinese Armorial Porcelain illustrates 220 examples from the Cooke Collection.Angela HowardThanks to Angela Howard of Heirloom & Howard Ltd. for her assistance in cataloguing this lot. The coat is of Chester of Royston and Cockenheath in Hertfordshire, Ermine on a chief sable a griffin passant or. The Chester family came originally from Derbyshire, but the ancestor of this branch came to prominence when Sir Robert Chester was a gentleman of the Privy Chamber to King Henry VIII. Made for Robert Chester, an East India Company director, and also a director and promoter of the South Sea Company. Three similar services were made in the Chinese Imari palette for three SS Co. associates. No cracks or restoration. A tiny nick to the rim, which appears to take glaze rather than body. In generally good condition.

The arms are those of Pinell impaling Hamlin. Made for Richard Pinell of the East India Company, who died in June 1744. He must have married a Miss Hamlin of the Leicestershire or Buckinghamshire family, which is not closely related to the Hamlyns of Devon (baronets). No cracks or restoration. Some shallow chips around the rim and some surface wear.

Soup bowl with worn gilt decoration to the centre and spear head border. Imari bowl with small stained hairline to the interior which are not visible externally. Showing areas of pitting. Each show some wear and surface grubbiness commensurate with age.
