A matched pair of Derby ice pails. c.1795, with gilded shell handles, decorated in the Imari palette in iron red, cobalt blue and gold, one bearing a puce painted mark, the other an unusual gold painted version of the mark, 4¼in. (10.8cm.) high. (2). * Provenance: Included in a 1949 inventory of porcelain bequeathed to Dr. John Alistair Burkhardt by his aunt, Miss Charlotte Mary Sandford of 27, The Little Boltons, South Kensington. The inventory was prepared by White Berry & Catford, Valuers, 28 Cadogan Place, SW1 and dated 3rd March 1949. Most of the pieces on this inventory are included in our auction catalogue (lots 15 to 49). Photographs of the inventory are available via e-mail by request and a copy of the inventory will be provided to purchasers of these lots after the sale.
A Meissen Imari pattern baluster coffee pot and cover. c.1730, blue crossed swords and Dreher `x` marks to inner rim of base, with sparrow beak spout, moulded S-scroll handle and domed cover with ball finial, the body and cover painted in iron red, green and gilt with four alternate panels of pendant prunus branches and chrysanthemums divided by four copper-lustre panels gilt with zig-zag diaper ornament reserved with an iron-red and gilt mon, an iron red floral and foliate meander border above, sprays of peony to the neck, spout and handle, 8¼in. (21cm.) high, tip of spout and rim of cover restored. * A tea bowl and saucer in a similar pattern were sold at Christies King Street, Sale No. 6599, 8th July 2002, Lot 264, hammer price £3585 inc. premium.
