Japanese Imari jardiniere, ovoid form, painted in traditional colours, on a hardwood stand, height overall 51cm.Condition report:No chips or cracks. It is fairly modern. The rim has some irregular patches of blue which stand out a little obviously, but they dont appear to be over-painting, maybe corrections during the manufacturing.

A TALL AND RARE JAPANESE KAKIEMON-STYLE EWEREDO PERIOD, C.1660-80The bulbous body with a slender neck and a curved handle to the side, decorated in underglaze blue, red, black and green enamels; the body painted with pavilions in a mountainous river landscape, surrounded by luxuriant gardens and with large palm trees behind them; the neck embellished with further blooms and formal floral designs, the handle with karakusa scrolls, 26.7cm.Cf.C J A Jörg, Fine & Curious, Japanese Export Porcelain in Dutch Collections, p.161, no.181, for a closely related ewer in the Groninger Museum, Groningen. The author notes that the combination of a Chinese Transitional-style landscape in underglaze blue and the enamelled decoration is very unusual, and it places this piece between the early Japanese enamels and the developing Imari and Kakiemon styles. He also notes that no other comparable piece seems to be recorded.

A LARGE JAPANESE IMARI BOWLEDO PERIOD, C.1700The deep U-shaped body raised on a short foot, typically decorated in underglaze blue, gilt, pink and red enamels, the well painted with a large vase of flowers by a fence, the cavetto and rim with a wide border enclosing formal designs of prunus, lotus and tasselled curtains, the reverse painted with similar decoration, 28.7cm. A LARGE JAPANESE 'GOLD IMARI' DISHEDO PERIOD, C.1700Richly decorated in gilt, pink and red enamels, painted to the centre with a flowering spray of peony framed by a band of quails, millet and other birds in flight, the rim with panels enclosing peony, magnolia and camellia, the reverse left undecorated, 54.1cm.Cf. A LARGE JAPANESE IMARI CHARGEREDO PERIOD, 1680-1710Typically decorated in underglaze blue, gilt, black and red enamels, the well with bamboo and stylised lotus flowers in between bands of diaper cell patterns, the cavetto and rim with a wide border enclosing shaped panels of shishi and ho-o birds, on a ground of flowers and scrolling tendrils rendered in gilt, the reverse with three sprays of peony, 54cm.Provenance: from the collection of Charles William Martin (1850-96) of Quorn Place, Leicestershire. A Chinese zhisha plaque, 20th Century, depicting a boy leading his ox, 29cm diameter, a baluster-shaped vase, 22cm high, a similar plate, 24.2cm diameter, a teapot decorated with lotus, a lacquered plate decorated gilt figures in a landscape, 26cm diameter, an Imari bowl with floral petal-shaped rim, 21cm dimeter, a teapot decorated figures in a landscape, 20cm high, a sugar jar etc. CONDITION REPORT: the teapot with a chip to the underside edge of the cover, the spout restored, hairline crack around the lower terminal of the handle. Cup with chrysanthemums has a small rim chip and three hairline cracks. The cup with bamboo has a hairline crack to rim and its saucer has a crack also. Thre blue painted cylindrical vessel has a hairline crack down the length of its side. The small vase in good condition. Cantonese plate in good condition. The two handled jar in good condition.
