A JAPANESE SHOKI-IMARI DISH EDO PERIOD, C.1630-40 The well decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a small hare prancing beneath a scrolling cloud, inscribed to the side 'Spring White Hare' in a rectangular cartouche, the design created in fukizumi with paper stencils covered in splashed ink, the outlines drawn afterwards in cobalt blue, the surface speckled with sand or grit, raised on a circular unglazed foot, 20.3cm. Provenance: formerly a Japanese private collection. See Portland Art Museum, access. no.2018.76.21 for a related Shoki-Imari dish depicting a rabbit prancing under a cloud. Also, see the British Museum, access. no.1959,0418.1 for a dish with the moon and rabbit. Cf. R S Jenyns, Japanese Porcelain, pl.6B, where the British Museum dish is discussed. This dish is an example of early porcelain produced at the Tengudani kiln in Arita. The original design was Chinese; the hare is often represented pounding the elixir of life.

Provenance: formerly the collection of Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth Dingwall (1869-1946).
A LARGE JAPANESE IMARI CHARGER EDO PERIOD, LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY Typically decorated in underglaze blue, gilt, red and orange enamels, the well painted with pavilions by the water, with flowering prunus, irises and maple trees around them, a bridge connecting the islands and with a temple nestled amongst mountains visible in the distance, the cavetto with alternating panels of further buildings and stylised peonies, the rim with a band of flowerheads and scrolling tendrils; the underside with branches of chrysanthemum, prunus, peonies and dianthus, a band of reishi heads encircling the foot; a rhomboid paper collection label for 'Collection Frederic Poiret' and another numbered 347/2, 33.7cm. See Christie's, Japanese Art at the English Court, 8th-19th December 2014, lot 70, for a pair of Imari dishes from the same set and also from the collection of Frederic Poiret.
AN UNUSUAL PAIR OF JAPANESE RETICULATED IMARI DISHES EDO PERIOD, 1690-1730 The octagonal bodies decorated in underglaze blue, gilt, red, green and black enamels, each with a large shishi to the well prancing amongst peonies, the cavetto and rim with alternating panels enclosing further lion dogs, flowering prunus trees and acanthus leaves, each side with a circular medallion with brocade patterns in openwork, each 28.9cm. J Ayers, Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, vol.II, pp.666-667, nos.1618-1620 and 1621-1630 for other examples of Arita dishes with reticulated roundels. A LARGE JAPANESE IMARI FIGURE OF A BIJIN EDO PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY The elegant figure smiles gently whilst holding the hem of her robes, her voluminous garments richly decorated in underglaze blue, gilt, red, green, purple and yellow enamels, painted with large open fans, trees, leaves and flowerheads, the paulownia leaves and tendrils reminiscent of the Imperial kiri mon, 58cm. A NEAR PAIR OF JAPANESE IMARI TOKKURI EDO PERIOD, EARLY 18TH CENTURY The sake bottles with tall bulbous bodies and elongated necks, both painted in underglaze blue, gilt, green, yellow, red and purple enamels, with shaped panels enclosing ho-o birds in flight and iron-red medallions containing stylised flowerheads, on a dense ground of blossoms and scrolling tendrils, the shoulders with chrysanthemum mon and lappets, 24cm and 23cm.
