A MASSIVE JAPANESE IMARI CHARGER MEIJI OR TAISHO PERIOD, 19TH OR 20TH CENTURY The well typically decorated in underglaze blue, gilt, red, green, cyan and black enamels, with a complex pattern of chrysanthemum flowerheads and brocade patterns, the cavetto with further flowers and three large dragons emerging from the side, the rim with a band of floral designs in octagonal cells, 61cm. Provenance: from a private English collection acquired in Yokohama, Japan, in the 1940s.
A PAIR OF UNUSUAL JAPANESE IMARI VASES MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Of tall conical shape, both painted with continuous designs of many birds flying and perched amongst trees and bamboo shoots in a luxuriant garden, with a band of auspicious designs above the foot and lappets beneath the rim, 25.5cm. (2) Provenance: from a deceased estate, Hampshire.
A JAPANESE SHOKI-IMARI DISH EDO PERIOD, C.1630-40 The well decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a small prancing hare beneath a crescent moon, with a double ring to the rim and the surface speckled with sand or grit, raised on a circular unglazed foot, 13.4cm. See the British Museum, access. no.1959,0418.1 for a comparable Shoki-Imari dish with an added inscription reading 'Spring White Hare' to the side. Also, see R S Jenyns, Japanese Porcelain, pl.6B for a comparable piece. The dish is an example of early porcelain produced at the Tengudani kiln in Arita. The hare and moon were created with paper stencils and then covered with splashed ink, fukizumi. The outline was drawn afterwards in cobalt blue. The original design on which this dish is modelled is Chinese; the hare is often represented pounding the elixir of life and in Chinese the words for 'full moon' and 'rice cake' have the same sound.
TWO MASSIVE JAPANESE IMARI CHARGERS EDO PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY Both decorated in underglaze blue, gilt, red, green and black enamels, one painted with a large double-handled vase to the well containing chrysanthemum and peonies, the rim with two large birds of prey and two phoenix in between panels of scrolling tendrils; the other with a central panel containing a stylised vase of flowers and with four medallions enclosing butterflies, with shaped panels, further blooms, foliage and pomegranates to the rim, 55.5cm max. (2) Provenance: from an English private collection, Suffolk. Cf. J Ayers, Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, pp.702-3 no.1716 for other large dishes with similar decoration.
EIGHT JAPANESE IMARI DISHES FROM THE COLLECTION OF AUGUSTUS THE STRONG (1670-1733) EDO PERIOD, LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY Typically decorated in underglaze blue, gilt and overglaze enamels, each painted with a large bulbous jardinière flanked by two smaller vases, the three vessels containing further sprays of peonies, daisies, and other flowers, with small birds flying above, the rim with large sprays of peonies and two ho-ho birds with long tail feathers, incised to the reverse sides with Dresden inventory marks for the collection of Augustus the Strong of Saxony incised to the reverse sides, four with 'N=345+' and the four others with 'N=92+', each approx. 21.7cm. (8) Cf. J Ayers, Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, p.662 no.1556 for another plate with the same design in the British Royal Collection.
A MASSIVE JAPANESE IMARI CHARGER MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Decorated in underglaze blue, iron-red and gilt with two large shaped panels, one containing two deer in an autumnal landscape under maple leaves, the other with boys playing mahjong, the sides with peacocks amongst flowering branches and peonies, the reverse with flowerheads, butterflies and karakusa scrolls, the base marked fuki choshun (wealth and everlasting spring), together with a hardwood stand, 56.8cm.
