Exley was a leading light in the collecting of English ceramics from the early twentieth century to the post war period. During much of that time, attributions to many English factories were still in their infancy. He was a member of the English Ceramic Circle and wrote The Pinxton China Factory, 1963 and the History of Torksey and Mansfield China Factory, 1970. Exley left a large collection of English glass to the Usher Gallery, Lincoln. The numbers in his purchasing book (available at the view, but not for sale) correlate in most cases with the numbers on his labels, e.g. no. 56, and are quoted at the end of the catalogue entry. References to Watney are to the sales of Dr Bernard Watney, Bonhams, 1999 and 2000
